ઈવા મક્કમ પગલે તેની હોસ્ટેલમાં પાછી જઈ રહી હતી. મારા પિતા કંઈક વિચિત્ર નજરે તેની સામે જોઈ રહ્યા હતા. તેમના મનમાં શું ચાલી રહ્યું હતું તેની મને ખબર નહોતી. પણ તેથી મને કશો ફરક પડતો ન હતો. હું ઈવાને ચાહતો હતો, અને વહેલામાં વહેલા તેની સાથે લગ્ન કરવાનો હતો.
અમે કારમાં બેઠા અને અંધશાળામાંથી બહાર નીકળ્યા. હું ઈવા સાથે લગ્ન કરું તે પહેલાં મારા પિતા તેને મળે તેમ હું ઇચ્છતો હતો. પણ મુલાકાત નિષ્ફળ ગઈ હતી. મારા પિતા ગુસ્સે થઈ ગયા અને કહ્યું, “તું તેની સાથે એ રીતે લગ્ન ન કરી શકે. તે અંધ છે…” એથી હું ગુસ્સે થઈ ગયો. “તો તે જોઈ શકે તેવું કંઈક કરો,” હું તાડૂક્યો.
મારા પિતા મૂંઝાઈ ગયા હતા. તેમને એમ હતું કે ઈવા એક અંધ, લાચાર જીવ હતી, જેણે મારું હૃદય ચોર્યું હતું. “તમે શું કરવાના?” મેં કડવાશથી પૂછ્યું.પિતાએ કંઈ જવાબ આપ્યો નહિ. ખાંસીના એક ભયંકર હુમલાએ તેમને હચમચાવી મૂક્યા. પણ સદ્ભાગ્યે તેઓ કારને કાબૂમાં રાખી શક્યા.
અમે ઘરે પહોંચ્યા ત્યાં સુધીમાં અમે બંને કશું બોલ્યા નહિ. હું કાંઈ પણ બોલ્યા સિવાય ગાડીમાંથી બહાર આવી ઘરમાં ગયો. મેં મારા રૂમમાં જઈને પથારીમાં પડતું નાખ્યું. મને લાગ્યું કે મારા પિતા મને અને મારી લાગણીને ક્યારેય સમજશે નહિ. પણ મારી મા મને સમજતી હતી. તે થોડાં અઠવાડિયા પહેલાં ઈવાને મળી હતી અને તેને (તે) ખૂબ ગમી ગઈ હતી. જોકે હું મારો નિર્ણય બદલીશ તેવી તેને આશા હતી.
મા મારા રૂમમાં આવી. “બધાં કરતાં ઈવા મને ખૂબ સારી રીતે સમજે છે. તે કહે છે કે મેં તેના જીવનમાં રોશની ફેલાવી છે. હવે જો હું તેને છોડી જાઉં તો તે ફરી અંધકારમાં ડૂબી જશે.” મેં તેને (માને) કહ્યું. તને કલ્પના પણ ન હોય તે કરતાં પણ વધુ તારા પિતા તારા સુખ માટે ચિંતા કરે છે. તેમના પર ગુસ્સો ના કરતો, તે તેમના સ્વાથ્ય માટે સારું નથી.” તેણે પ્રેમપૂર્વક કહ્યું. “અરે, (હું) દિલગીર છું! શું તેઓ ખરેખર બીમાર છે?”
તેણે (માએ) મારી પાસે આવી ધીમેથી કાનમાં કહ્યું, “હવે મારે તને કહેવું જોઈએ, તારા પિતાને ફેફસાંનું કેન્સર થયેલું છે … તે તેમને ખાંસતા સાંભળ્યા છે – તેથી જે કંઈ કરે તે વિચારીને કરજે.” તે મારા રૂમમાંથી ચાલી ગઈ. આ આઘાતથી હું મૂંઝાઈ ગયો.

“ઉદાસ? પણ તું તો મને જોઈ શકતી નથી!” હા, પણ હું અનુભવી શકું છું કે તું ઉદાસ છે. મને કહે શું થયું છે?”
મેં તેને કહ્યું ત્યારે મારા અવાજમાં ગંભીરતા હતી, “પિતાજી ખૂબ જ બીમાર છે. અમે હૉસ્પિટલ જઈ તેમને મળી આવ્યા. ડૉક્ટર પણ ખુશ નહોતા દેખાતા. હું જાણું છું કે હવે પિતાજીની (જીવવાની) બહુ શક્યતા નથી.”
“કેટલું દુખદ !” આટલું બોલીને તે શાંત બેસી રહી. મને તેની સામે જોઈને આનંદ થયો.
આવી દેવીને હું કેવી રીતે છોડી શકું? મારા માટે તે પરિપૂર્ણ હતી. મેં તેનો હાથ પકડ્યો અને તેની આંગળીમાં વીંટી પહેરાવી દીધી. આશ્ચર્ય સાથે તેનો ચહેરો ઊંચો થયો. અ… અ… એ શું છે? તેણે પૂછ્યું. “વીંટી,” મેં કહ્યું. “તને ખબર નથી કે આપણે બંને પરણી જવાનાં છીએ?” મારા અવાજમાં ભારોભાર રોમાંચ હતો. બીજા હાથે તેણે વીંટીનો સ્પર્શ કરી જોયો. એકાએક તેણે વીંટી ખેંચી કાઢીને મારા ઘૂંટણ પર મૂકી. “ના,” તે બોલી.
“આપણે થોડો સમય થોભી જઈએ!” તેનો અવાજ ધ્રૂજતો હતો. “થોભી જવાનું? શા માટે?” તેના ચહેરા પર ખુશીની ચમક ફરી વળી. તે ખુશ હતી અને પરી જેવી મોહક લાગતી હતી. “હું વીંટી જોઈ શકું ત્યાં સુધી … મારે એ વીંટી જોવી છે.” તે ધીમેથી બોલી. હું તેની સામે જોઈ રહ્યો. સાંજ ઠંડી હોવા છતાં મારી ગરદન પર પરસેવો વળી ગયો.
“તું શું કહેવા માગે છે?” મેં પૂછ્યું .“હું તને એ તો કહેવા માગતી હતી,” તે બોલી, “નવી આંખો મેળવવા માટે હું હૉસ્પિટલ જઈ રહી છું. કોઈક મૃત્યુની નજીક જઈ રહ્યું છે, તેણે તેની બંને આંખોનું મારા માટે દાન કર્યું છે. એ કોણ છે તે હું જાણતી નથી … પણ ભગવાન તેનું ભલું કરે. મને એ પણ સમજાતું નથી કે એ વ્યક્તિ મારા માટે શા માટે ચક્ષુદાન કરે છે?” છોકરો ખુશ થશે? તમે એ કેવી રીતે કહી શકો?
મેં માત્ર તેની સામે જોયું. મારું હૃદય અવર્ણનીય આનંદથી સખત જોરથી ધબકતું હતું. દુઃખ પણ એટલું જ તીવ્ર હતું.
એક મહિના પછી હું મારી વાડીએથી પાછો જઈ રહ્યો હતો. મારા હાથમાંના ટોપલાની નારંગીઓ તડકામાં સુંદર અને પીળી દેખાતી હતી. ઘેર મારી રાહ જોતી ઈવાને મળવા હું ખૂબ આતુર હતો. પણ કબર જોતાં જ હું એકાએક અટકી ગયો … તેઓ કબરમાંથી મારી સામે જોઈ રહ્યા હતા.
હું જાણતો હતો કે તેઓ ત્યાં હતા. “મારે આભાર માનવો જોઈએ,” મારા હૃદયમાં લાગણીના ઝરણા સાથે મેં કહ્યું. “તમે હૃદયથી ખૂબ દયાળુ હતા અને તમે એ તમારા અંતિમ શ્વાસ સાથે દર્શાવ્યું. દરેક વખતે ઈવા એ સુંદર આંખોથી મારી સામે જુએ છે … ત્યારે મને તમારી હાજરીનો અનુભવ થાય છે … પિતાજી, હું તમને ચાહું છું!”
