Summary of the Lesson पाठ का सार
The story narrates the episode where the narrator (Dr. James Herriot), a veterinary surgeon, saves the life of a dull dog, Tricki. The story starts when Dr. James was driving, he saw Mrs. Pumphrey and Tricki walking down the street. He was shocked to see that Tricki had become very fat and was ill. So, hé enquired about Tricki’s health from Mrs. Pumphrey.
Mrs. Pumphrey explained to Dr. James that she felt that Tricki was suffering from malnutrition. So, she had been giving him some extra food. Furthermore, she added that Tricki only walked with her and did not play games.
After learning about Tricki’s condition and his routine, Dr. James informed Mrs. Pumphrey that if she did not reduce his food and increase his exercise, her dog would fall ill. After a few days, Mrs. Pumphrey called and informed Dr. James that Tricki was not eating anything and had been vomiting.
Dr. James suggested Mrs. Pumphrey to hospitalise him for a fortnight for observation, so that proper treatment could follow. Mrs. Pumphrey was sad but she allowed him to take Tricki. Dr. James carried Tricki wrapped in a blanket to his car while the maids started keeping the things that Tricki would need during hospitalisation in Dr. James’ car.
In the hospital, Tricki was put on a water diet for first two days. At the end of the second day, Tricki started to show some interest in his surroundings. On the third day, he walked slowly and joined the greyhound (hunting dog) in the garden. Later, he ran with enthusiasm when the food was served. He also ate the food kept for him.
While Tricki was recovering, Mrs. Pumphrey used to phone Dr. James’ clinic several times a day to know about Tricky’s recovery. Dr. James assured her that Tricki was out of danger. Hearing this, Mrs. Pumphrey started sending eggs and wine for Tricki. The food sent for Tricki was eaten by Dr. James and his team.
After a fortnight, Dr. James called and informed home. Mrs. Pumphrey that Tricki was fit and could go Mrs. Pumphrey reached the surgery within half an hour. As soon as the dog saw his owner, he jumped into her lap and started licking her face. Mrs. Pumphrey was very happy at finding Tricki as excited as he used to be. She thanked Dr. James Herriot and called the treatment ‘A triumph of surgery’.
