Important Points and Rules
The words ‘A’, ‘An’ and ‘The’ are called articles Articles are usually placed before nouns.
It is used to point out the noun that is being referred to in a sentence.
e.g. (i) Sheela sang a song.
(ii) This is an umbrella.
Articles दो प्रकार के होते हैं – Indefinite articles and Definite article.
‘A/An’ को Indefinite articles कहते हैं तथा ‘The’ को Definite article कहते हैं।
Rules of Article ‘A’ and ‘An’
• जो noun किसी consonant letter से आरम्भ होता है तथा sound भी consonant letter की देता है उस noun से पहले article ‘a’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
e.g. a cat, a doctor, a hero, etc.
• यदि कोई noun किसी vowel letter से आरम्भ होता है, लेकिन sound किसी consonant letter की देता है, तो उससे पहले भी article ‘a’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
e.g. a one-eyed man, a European, a university, etc.
• जो noun किसी vowel letter से आरम्भ होता है तथा sound भी vowel letter की देता है, उस noun से पहले article ‘an’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है। e.g. an exam, an enemy, an orange, etc.
• यदि कोई noun किसी consonant letter से आरम्भ होता है, लेकिन sound किसी vowel letter की देता है, तो उससे पहले भी article ‘an’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
e.g. an hour, an heir, an hourly visit, etc.
Rules of Article ‘The’
• ‘The’ का प्रयोग Countable या Uncountable noun से पहले किया जाता है।
e.g. I found a bag. The bag contained a coin. (Bag is a Countable noun )
• यदि किसी Proper noun का प्रयोग एक Common noun की तरह किया जाए, तब उस Common noun से पहले ‘the’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
e.g. Sachin Tendulkar is the God of cricket. (God is a Common noun)
• यदि किसी वाक्य में दो बार Comparative degree का प्रयोग होता है, तब दोनों से पहले article ‘the’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
e.g. The less I spend, the less I have to worry about saving.
• यदि वाक्य में ‘Comparative degree + of the two’ दिया गया है, तब भी Comparative degree से पहले ‘the’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
e.g. He is the better of the two men.
• Adjective की Superlative degree में article ‘the’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
e.g. He is the most intelligent boy in the class.
Omission of Articles
• जब किसी नदी के नाम के साथ उसके शहर का नाम जुड़ा हो, तब उस नदी के नाम से पहले article ‘the’ का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
e.g. Prayagraj on Ganges, Kingston on Thames, Stratford on Avon, etc.
• Names of Meals (Lunch, dinner, supper, breakfast) से पहले तथा बीमारियों (diseases) के नाम से पहले सामान्यतया किसी भी articles का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
e.g. (i) She was invited to the dinner. (×)
She was invited to dinner. (√)
(ii) He died of the cholera. (×)
He died of cholera. (√)
• किसी भाषा ( language), रंग (colour) तथा विषय (subject) से पहले भी articles का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
e.g. (i) He has no interest in the Mathematics. (×)
He has no interest in Mathematics. (√)
(ii) She can speak the Hindi and the Punjabi both. (×)
She can speak Hindi and Punjabi both. (√)
• Appoint, made, nominate, elect, declare, title of, post of, rank of, etc. के बाद यदि कोई noun आता है, तब उस noun से पहले articles का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।
e.g. (i) He was elected an MLA. (×)
He was elected MLA. (√)
(ii) We made him a monitor. (×)
We made him monitor. (√)
• Church, court, hospital, prison, jail, school, college, university, etc. शब्दों से पहले articles का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
e.g. He goes to the Church daily. (×)
He goes to Church daily. (√)
• Abstract noun तथा Material noun से पहले articles का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
e.g. (i) Gold is a precious metal.
(ii) Virtue has its own reward.
• Games के नामों से पहले भी articles का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
