UP Board Class 10 English Chapter 3 – A Tiger in the Zoo (Poetry)

Explanation In these lines, the poet is describing a tiger in a cage. The tiger with bright and clear stripes moves inside the cage. The cage is very small so the tiger can hardly take a few steps along its length. His pads are soft like velvet so no one can hear the sound of his footsteps. In spite of being the most powerful creature, he is imprisoned inside a cage. This situation has made the tiger angry but he is keeping quiet as he knows that he is helpless in this situation.

व्याख्या इन पंक्तियों में, कवि पिंजरे में कैद एक बाघ का विवरण कर रहा है। साफ चमकदार धारियों वाला बाघ पिंजरे के अन्दर घूमता है। पिंजरा बहुत छोटा है, इसलिए बाघ उसकी लम्बाई के साथ कठिनता से मात्र कुछ ही कदम चल पाता है। उसके पंजों का निचला भाग मखमल की भाँति नर्म है, इसलिए कोई भी उसके कदमों की आवाज नहीं सुन सकता है। सर्वशक्तिशाली प्राणी होने के बावजूद, वह एक पिंजरे में कैद है। इस परिस्थिति ने बाघ को क्रोधित कर दिया है। किन्तु वह चुप है, क्योंकि वह जानता है कि वह इस परिस्थिति में असहाय है।

Explanation In these lines, the poet is filled with sorrow for the caged tiger. He feels that a tiger should be free in his natural habitat.

He should be hiding in the shadows and quietly moving through the long grass near the water hole. He should be waiting for a fat and healthy deer to pass, in the hopes of getting a heavy meal. The poet wants to convey that the actual life of a tiger is in a jungle and not in a cage.

व्याख्या इन पंक्तियों में कवि पिंजरे में कैद बाघ के प्रति शोक से भर गया है। उसे महसूस होता है कि बाघ को अपने प्राकृतिक परिवेश में मुक्त होना चाहिए।

उसे परछाई में छिपना चाहिए एवं पानी के गड्ढे के पास वाली लम्बी घास में चुपचाप घूमना चाहिए। उसे भारी भोजन मिलने की आशा से, एक मोटे एवं स्वस्थ हिरण के गुजरने की प्रतीक्षा करनी चाहिए। कवि यह कहना चाहता है कि बाघ का वास्तविक जीवन जंगल में है न कि पिंजरे में।

Explanation In these lines, the poet explains what tiger in his natural habitat should be doing.

According to him, a free tiger should be roaring around the houses located at the jungle’s edge. He should be showing his sharp white teeth and his claws to terrorise the villagers.

व्याख्या इन पंक्तियों में, कवि समझाता है कि बाघ को उसके प्राकृतिक परिवेश में क्या करना चाहिए।

उसके अनुसार, एक मुक्त बाघ को जंगल के किनारे पाए जाने वाले घरों के इर्द-गिर्द दहाड़ना चाहिए। उसे गाँव वालों को भयभीत करने के लिए अपने नुकीले सफेद दाँत और पंजे दिखाने चाहिए।

Explanation In these lines, the poet’s focus returns to the angry tiger in the cage. The poet explains that unlike the tiger in the jungle, this tiger is not free. He is locked in the concrete cell. His strength and power is of no use, behind the bars of the cage. He is moving in his cage ignoring the visitors who are continuously visiting to have a look at him.

व्याख्या इन पंक्तियों में, कवि का ध्यान पिंजरे में बन्द क्रोधित बाघ पर वापस लौटता है । कवि समझाता है कि जंगल के बाघ के विपरीत यह बाघ आजाद नहीं है। वह सीमेन्ट से बने पिंजरे में बन्द है। उसकी शक्ति एवं ताकत, पिंजरे की सलाखों के पीछे व्यर्थ है। वह उसकी एक झलक पाने के लिए लगातार आने वाले आगन्तुकों को अनदेखा करते हुए अपने पिंजरे में टहल रहा है।

5. He hears the last voice at night,

The patrolling cars,

And stares with his brilliant eyes

At the brilliant stars.

Explanation In these lines, the poet says that even at night the tiger is disturbed. He hears the last sound of the patrolling cars of the zoo officials. The tiger stares at the brilliant stars shining brightly in the sky with his brilliant eyes which hope for freedom.

व्याख्या इन पंक्तियों में, कवि कहता है कि रात में भी बाघ परेशान रहता है। वह चिड़ियाघर के अधिकारियों की गश्त लगाती गाड़ियों की आखिरी आवाज़ सुनता है। बाघ अपनी चमकदार आँखों से, जो मुक्त होने की आशा रखती हैं, आसमान में चमकते सितारों को देखता है।

परीक्षा में Poetry भाग की किन्हीं भी तीन Poems के नाम दिए जाते हैं, जिनमें से किसी एक Poem का Central Idea लिखना होता है।

In this poem ‘A Tiger in the Zoo’, the poet tries to depict the poor conditions of a caged tiger. He contrasts and compares the life of a caged tiger with a tiger living in natural habitat, i.e. a jungle. Through the poem, the poet tries to convey that wild animals should be allowed to live freely in their natural habitat. Freedom is loved by all living beings and not just by human beings. The life of captivity breeds rage, intolerance and stress.

इस कविता, ‘A Tiger in the Zoo’ में कवि ने एक पिंजरे में बन्द बाघ की दरिद्र स्थिति का चित्रण करने का प्रयास किया है। वह पिंजरे में बन्द बाघ के जीवन की तुलना प्राकृतिक परिवेश अर्थात् जंगल में रहने वाले बाघ से करता है। कविता के माध्यम से, कवि यह बताने का प्रयास करता है कि जंगली जानवरों को उनके प्राकृतिक परिवेश में स्वतन्त्र रूप से रहने की अनुमति देनी चाहिए। आजादी सभी जीवित प्राणियों को प्रिय है न कि केवल मनुष्यों को। अधीनता का जीवन क्रोध, असहिष्णुता तथा तनाव को जन्म देता है।

Ans. A tiger in the cage is imprisoned. He is not free. In the cage, the tiger can hardly move and his strength is useless. His situation makes him angry but he remains quiet as he is helpless in the situation.

Ans. Some of the activities of the tiger behind the bars of its cage include stalking along the length of the cage, ignoring visitors, hearing patrolling cars and staring at the brilliant stars shining in the sky.

Ans. The repetition is a poetic device used by the poet in order to increase the intensity of the tiger’s rage and his helpless silence. Velvet quiet’ refers to the quiet pads of the tiger. They can only walk around the limited in the space The cage. use of ‘quiet rage’ symbolises the anger and ferocity that is building up inside the tiger as it wants freedom but the rage is quiet because he is locked in the cage and is helpless. Similarly, the use of ‘brilliant’ for the tiger’s eyes as well as the stars also brings out the magnificence of these lines. The tiger stares at the brilliant stars with his brilliant eyes dreaming about how beautiful his life could have been in the forest.

The repetition thus, gives a wonderful effect to the poem.
