પાંડવો ઉત્તર દિશા તરફ પ્રવાસ કરવા લાગ્યા. થોડા દિવસોમાં તેઓ હિમાલય પહોંચી ગયા. તેમણે પર્વતોનું આરોહણ ચાલુ કર્યું. તેઓ મેરુ પર્વત પહોંચ્યાં ત્યારે થાકીને લોથપોથ થઈ ગયા હતા. પછી એક ભયંકર ઘટના બની, દ્રૌપદી મૃત્યુ પામી ઢળી પડી. પાંડવોને આઘાત લાગ્યો પણ તેઓ કશું કરી શક્યા નહિ. તેમને યાત્રા આગળ ધપાવવી પડી. તે પછી સહદેવ ઢળી પડ્યો.
“તેને તેના ડહાપણ(જ્ઞાન)નું ઘમંડ હતું એટલે તેણે મરવું પડ્યું,” યુધિષ્ઠિર બોલ્યા. પછી નકલ મરણ પામ્યો. યુધિષ્ઠિરે ભીમને કહ્યું, “નકુલ મરણ પામ્યો, કારણ કે તેને તેના રૂપનું ઘમંડ હતું.” પછી અર્જુનનો વારો આવ્યો. યુધિષ્ઠિરે કહ્યું, અર્જુને કહ્યું હતું કે તે એક્લા હાથે જ દુશ્મનોને હણી શકતો હતો. એવું બોલીને તેણે મહાન યોદ્ધાઓનું અપમાન કર્યું હતું. તેને એટલા માટે જ મરવું પડ્યું.”
ભીમ અને યુધિષ્ઠિરે ચાલવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું. છેલ્લે ભીમ ઢળી પડ્યો. તે યુધિષ્ઠિર સામે બરાડી ઊઠ્યો, “હું શા માટે મરું? મેં શું ખોટું) કર્યું છે?” યુધિષ્ઠિરે કહ્યું, “મારા વહાલા ભીમ, મેં હંમેશાં તને ચાહ્યો છે, પરંતુ તારો પણ એક અપરાધ હતો. તું હંમેશાં તારા બળની બડાશ મારતો હતો.” તેમને મૂકીને યુધિષ્ઠિર આગળ ચાલ્યા. શાંતિની શોધમાં તેઓ એકલા આગળ ને આગળ ગયા. યુધિષ્ઠિર સિવાય બીજા દરેક જણ પડીને મરી જાય છે? |
પાંડવોએ હસ્તિનાપુર છોડ્યું ત્યારથી એક કૂતરો તેમની પાછળ પાછળ આવી રહ્યો હતો. તે આખી યાત્રા દરમિયાન તેમની સાથે રહ્યો હતો. યુધિષ્ઠિર એકલા પડી ગયા ત્યારે પણ તે તેમની પાછળ ચાલતો હતો.
યુધિષ્ઠિરે પર્વતની કેડી પર ચઢવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું. જ્યારે તેઓ તેમની યાત્રાના અંતિમ તબક્કામાં હતા ત્યારે તેમણે પોતાની આસપાસ એક વિચિત્ર પ્રકાશ જોયો.
પોતાના રથમાં તેમની તરફ આવી રહેલા દેવોના રાજા ઇન્દ્રને તેઓ ઓળખી ગયા. જ્યારે તેઓ નજીક આવ્યા ત્યારે ઇન્દ્ર રથમાંથી નીચે ઊતર્યા અને બોલ્યા, “રથમાં બેસી જાઓ યુધિષ્ઠિર, હું તમને સ્વર્ગમાં લઈ જવા માટે અહીં આવ્યો છું.” પરંતુ યુધિષ્ઠિરે તેમ કરવાની ના પાડી, કારણ કે તેઓ તેમના ભાઈઓ અને દ્રૌપદી વગર સ્વર્ગમાં જવા માગતા નહોતા. તેથી તેમણે કહ્યું, “જો તેઓ બધાં મારી સાથે ન આવે તો હું તમારી સાથે નહિ આવું.”
જ્યારે ઇન્દ્રએ આ સાંભળ્યું ત્યારે તેઓ હસ્યા અને કહ્યું, “મારા પ્રિય યુધિષ્ઠિર, તમે તેમની ચિંતા શા માટે કરો છો? તેઓ તો સ્વર્ગમાં ક્યારનાય છે. તમને એકલાને જ સદેહે સ્વર્ગમાં પ્રવેશ આપવામાં આવશે. કૃપા કરીને રથમાં બેસી જાઓ.” જ્યારે યુધિષ્ઠિર રથમાં બેસવા જતા હતા ત્યારે તેમણે કૂતરાને તેમની પાછળ આવતો જોયો. પછી યુધિષ્ઠિર એકાએક ઇન્દ્ર તરફ ફર્યા અને બોલ્યા, “મહેરબાની કરીને મને આ કૂતરાને રથમાં લઈ લેવા દો. હું જ્યારથી હસ્તિનાપુરથી નીકળ્યો ત્યારથી તે મારી સાથે ને સાથે રહ્યો છે.
તેના વગર મને સ્વર્ગમાં જવાનું ગમશે નહિ.” કૂતરા માટેનો તેમનો પ્રેમ જોઈને ઇન્દ્ર હસી પડ્યા. તેમણે કહ્યું, “કૂતરો’ સ્વર્ગમાં શી રીતે પ્રવેશી શકે? તેને એક્લો છોડી દો અને મારી સાથે ચાલો.” તેમ છતાં યુધિષ્ઠિર મક્કમ રહ્યા. તેમણે (નકારમાં) માથું હલાવીને કહ્યું, ‘ભગવનું, એવું ન કરી શકું. અત્યાર સુધી આ કૂતરો મારી મુશ્કેલીઓમાં ભાગીદાર રહ્યો છે. તે મને વફાદાર રહ્યો છે. હું તેને ન છોડી શકું. જો હું એવું કરું તો અત્યાર સુધીમાં મેં કરેલાં બધાં જ સત્કમનો નાશ થઈ જાય.”

The dog standing beside Yudhishthira took the shape of his father, Dharma. He addressed Yudhishthira, “My son, I am proud of you. You have always observed ‘ ‘dharma’ in your life. Even today you’ve observed it. It was a kind of a test and you have been successful. Go with Indra to the heaven. You deserve it.” [Pages 46-47]
