જ્યારે હું નાનો હતો ત્યારે અમારા પાડોશમાં સૌપ્રથમ આવેલા ટેલિફોનમાં એક ટેલિફોન અમારા કુટુંબનો હતો. પેટીની બાજુમાં ચળકતું રિસીવર લટકતું રહેતું. મને નંબર પણ યાદ હતો – 105. ટેલિફોનને પહોંચવા માટે હું ઘણો નાનો હતો પરંતુ મારી માતા જ્યારે તેમાં વાત કરતી ત્યારે હું મુગ્ધતાથી સાંભળતો. વ્યવસાય માટે દૂર ગયેલા મારા પિતા સાથે વાત કરવા એક વખત તેણે મને અધ્ધર ઊંચક્યો હતો.
જાદુ! પછી શોધી કાઢ્યું કે એ અદ્ભુત સાધનમાં અંદર ક્યાંક કોઈક વિસ્મયકારક વ્યક્તિ રહેતી હતી. તેનું નામ હતું “ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’, અને કોઈ બાબત એવી નહોતી જે એ જાણતી ન હોય. મારી માતા તેને ગમે તેનો નંબર પૂછી શકતી અને જ્યારે જ્યારે અમારી ઘડિયાળ બંધ પડી જતી ત્યારે ત્યારે ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’ સાચો સમય પૂરો પાડતી.
એક વખત મારી માતા પાડોશીને મળવા ગયેલી હતી ત્યારે આ રિસીવરમાંના જીનનો મને પહેલી વાર અંગત અનુભવ થયો. જ્યારે હું ભોંયરામાં રમી રહ્યો હતો ત્યારે મેં મારી આંગળી પર હથોડી વગાડી. ભયંકર પીડા થતી હતી. રડવાનો કોઈ અર્થ નહોતો. કારણ કે સહાનુભૂતિ દર્શાવનારું ઘેર કોઈ હતું નહિ. મારી દુખતી આંગળીને ચૂસતો હું મકાનની ચોતરફ ફર્યો અને છેવટે સીડીએ આવી ગયો. ટેલિફોન! હું ઝડપથી ટુલ તરફ દોડ્યો અને તેને ટેલિફોન આગળ સૂડી લાવ્યો. ઉપર ચડી જઈને મેં રિસીવર પકડી લીધું અને મારા કાને ધર્યું. હું બોલ્યો ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’. ત્યાં તો મધુર અને સ્પષ્ટ અવાજ મારા કાને પડ્યો. “ઇન્ફર્મેશન”.
“મેં આંગળીએ વગાડ્યું છે,” મેં દર્દભર્યા અવાજે ફોનમાં મોટેથી કહ્યું. સહજ આસુ આવી ગયાં. મને સાંભળનાર કોઈ હતું. “તારી માતા ઘરે નથી ?” પ્રશ્ન સંભળાયો. “ઘરે કોઈ નથી, હું એકલો જ છું.” “તને લોહી નીકળે છે?” “ના,” મેં જવાબ આપ્યો, “મેં હથોડી વગાડી અને તે દુખે છે.” “તું બરફપેટી ખોલી શકીશ?” તેણે પૂછ્યું. મેં કહ્યું કે હું ખોલી શકીશ. “તો બરફનો નાનકડો ટુકડો લઈને તારી આંગળી પર પકડી રાખ. તેનાથી પીડા બંધ થઈ જશે. કાળજી રાખજે,” તેણે સલાહ આપી. “જો રડતો નહિ, તને સારું થઈ જશે.”
આ “ઈન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ” કોણ છે? તમે મુસીબતમાં એકલા હો ત્યારે તમે શું કરો છો ? તે પછી દરેક બાબતે ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’ને ફોન કરતો. હું ભૂગોળમાં મદદ માટે કહેતો અને તે મને ફિલેન્ડેલ્ફિઆ ક્યાં આવેલું) હતું તે કહેતી. તે મને અંકગણિતમાં મદદ કરતી, અને મેં રાખેલી પાળેલી ખિસકોલી ફળ અને સૂકો મેવો ખાશે એમ પણ કહેતી, જ્યારે પેટી – અમારું પાળેલું કૅનરી (પંખી) મરી ગયું.

એક દિવસે હું ટેલિફોન પર હતો. ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન’ હવે પરિચિત થયેલો) અવાજ સંભળાયો. મેં પૂછ્યું, “તમે Fix ની જોડણી કેવી રીતે કરો છો?” “F-I-X” એ જ ક્ષણે મને ડરાવીને ખોટી – કૂર મજા લેતી મારી બહેન મોટેથી યા … આ … આ … આ … (એવી) ચીસ પાડીને દાદરમાંથી કૂદી પડી. હું ટુલ પરથી પડી ગયો અને ટેલિફોનનું રિસીવર પેટીમાંથી ખેંચાઈ ગયું. અમે બંને ગભરાઈ ગયાં. ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’ હવે ત્યાં રહી નહોતી, રિસીવર ખેંચી કાઢ્યું ત્યારે મેં તેને (ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝને) નુકસાન નહોતું કર્યું એની મને જરા પણ ખાતરી નહોતી, થોડી મિનિટો પછી દરવાજે એક માણસે આવીને ઊભો) હતો. તે બોલ્યો,
“હું ટેલિફોન રિપેર કરનારી છું, ઑપરેટરે કહ્યું કે આ નંબર પર કંઈક તક્લીફ હોવી જોઈએ.” તેણે આવીને મારા હાથમાંથી રિસીવર લીધું. મેં તેને પૂછ્યું, “શું થયું?” ઠીક, જુઓ અમે તેને એકાદ બે મિનિટમાં જોડી શકીએ છીએ.” તેણે ટેલિફોનની પેટી ખોલી અને થોડીક વાર કામ કર્યું. પછી ટેલિફોન પર બોલ્યો, “હાય, હું પીટ, 105 નંબર પર બધું નિયંત્રણમાં (બરાબર) છે. છોકરાની બહેને તેને ગભરાવી મૂક્યો હતો અને તેણે વાયર પેટીમાંથી ખેંચી કાઢ્યો હતો.” તેણે ફોન મૂકી દીધો, સ્મિત કર્યું, મારા માથા પર ટપલી મારી અને ચાલ્યો ગયો. આ બધું એક નાના શહેરમાં બન્યું.
પછી હું નવ વરસનો થયો. અમે બોસ્ટન ગયાં અને મને ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’ની ઘણી ખોટ સાલી. ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’ ઘરે પેલી જૂની લાકડાની પેટીમાં (પાછળ) રહી ગઈ હતી. જ્યારે હું મોટો થયો ત્યારે પણ બાળપણના સંવાદોની સ્મૃતિઓએ ખરેખર મને ક્યારેય છોડ્યો નહોતો. શંકાની ઘણી ક્ષણોમાં હું તે સલામતીની લાગણી યાદ કરતો. કારણ કે હું જાણતો હતો કે હું ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’ને ફોન કરીને સાચો જવાબ મેળવી શકતો હતો. તે કેટલી બધી ધીરજવાળી, સમજુ અને માયાળુ હતી ! ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ” અને નાના છોકરા વચ્ચે કેવો સંબંધ સ્થપાશે? |
થોડાં વરસો પછી કૉલેજ પાછા વળતાં મારું વિમાન સીએટલમાં ઊતર્યું. મારી પાસે અધ ક્લાકનો સમય હતો. મેં હવે ત્યાં રહેતી મારી બહેન સાથે ટેલિફોન પર 15 મિનિટ પસાર કરી. પછી હું શું કરું છું એ વિચાર્યા વગર મેં મારા વતનના ઑપરેટરને ફોન કર્યો અને કહ્યું, ‘ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ’, ચમત્કારિક રીતે મને સુપરિચિત, મધુર અને સ્પષ્ટ અવાજ સંભળાયો. “ઇન્ફર્મેશન, મહેરબાની કરીને મને કહેશો Fx શબ્દની જોડણી કેવી રીતે કરાય?” એક લાંબા વિરામ (મૌન) પછી મૃદુ પ્રત્યુત્તર સંભળાયો. “હું ધારું છું.”
ઇન્ફર્મેશન પ્લીઝ બોલી, “… કે તમારી આંગળીએ હવે સારું થઈ ગયું હશે.” મારો અવાજ રૂંધાઈ ગયો. મેં હસવાનો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો. “એટલે હજી તમે એ જ છો. તે સમયે મારે મન તમારું કેટલું મહત્ત્વ હતું, તેની તમને કલ્પના છે કે નહીં, એની મને ખબર નથી.” “શું તને ખબર છે,” તેણે જવાબ આપ્યો, “કે મારે મન તારું કેટલું મહત્ત્વ હતું?” મારે બાળકો ન હતાં, અને હું તારા ટેલિફોનની રાહ જોયા કરતી હતી. તે મૂખઈ હતી, ખરું ને?” મેં તેને કહ્યું કે આ વર્ષો દરમિયાન મેં તેને ઘણી વાર યાદ કરી હતી.

હવે કંઈક દુખદ થવાનું છે તે શું હોઈ શકે? ત્રણ જ મહિના પછી હું ફરીથી સીએટલ વિમાનમથકે હતો. મેં ફોન કર્યો, અલગ જ અવાજે જવાબ આપ્યો. “ઇન્ફર્મેશન” અને મેં સેલીને આપવા માટે કહ્યું. “તમે (કોઈ) મિત્ર છો?” “હા,” મેં કહ્યું, “એક જૂનો મિત્ર”. “તો તમને કહેતાં મને દુઃ ખ થાય છે. સૅલી બીમાર હોવાથી છેલ્લાં થોડાં વરસથી પાર્ટ ટાઇમ કામ કરી રહી હતી. તે પાંચ અઠવાડિયા પહેલાં ગુજરી ગઈ.
પરંતુ હું ફોન મૂકી દઉં તે પહેલાં તેણે કહ્યું, “એક મિનિટ થોભો, તમે પૉલ છો ?” “હા.” “ઠીક, સૅલીએ તમારા માટે સંદેશો મૂકેલો છે. તેણે તે લખ્યો હતો.” તે (સંદેશો) શો હશે તે અગાઉથી લગભગ જાણવા છતાં મેં પૂછ્યું, “તે શો (સંદેશો) હતો?” “આ રહ્યો, હું વાંચું છું.” –“તેને કહેજો કે ગાવા માટે બીજી દુનિયા (પણ) છે. હું શું કહેવા માગું છું તે, તે જાણી જશે.” મેં તેનો આભાર માન્યો ને (ફોન) મૂકી દીધો. સૅલી શું કહેવા માગતી હતી તે હું જાણી જ ગયો હતો. લાગણીઓ એ લોકોને જોડતા અદશ્ય તાર છે.
