હું એક સરકારી સ્કૂલમાં પાંચમા ધોરણમાં હતો. એક દિવસ સ્કૂલની ફી આપવા માટે મારા ખિસ્સામાં ચાર રૂપિયા લઈને સ્કૂલમાં ગયો. ત્યાં પહોંચ્યો ત્યારે મને ખબર પડી કે જે શિક્ષક ફી લેતા હતા તે, માસ્ટર ગુલામ મોહમદ, રજા પર હતા અને તેથી ફી બીજે દિવસે લેવામાં આવશે. આખો દિવસ તો સિક્કા મારા ખિસ્સામાં સાવ પડ્યા રહ્યા, પણ સ્કૂલ પૂરી થયા પછી હું જતો હતો ત્યારે તેઓ (સિક્કા) બોલવા લાગ્યા.
બહુ સારું. સિક્કાઓ વાતો નથી કરતા. તેઓ ખણ -ખણ ખખડ્યા કરે. પણ એ દિવસે તેઓ ખરેખર બોલ્યા! એક સિક્કાએ કહ્યું, “પેલી તાજી ગરમાગરમ જલેબી વિશે તું શું વિચારે છે? જલેબી ખાવા માટે તો હોય છે, અને જેમના ખિસ્સામાં પૈસા હોય તેઓ તેમને (જલેબી) ખાઈ શકે.”
આ સિક્કાઓને તમારો શો જવાબ હશે? | આમ જુઓ, (તમે) ચાર રૂપિયા,” મેં તેમને કહ્યું. “હું સારો છોકરો છું. મને ગેરમાર્ગે દોરશો નહિ, નહીં તો) એ તમારે માટે સારું નથી. ઉપરાંત તમે મારી ફી માટેના પૈસા છો. આજે હું તમને વાપરું તો કાલે હું માસ્ટર ગુલામ મોહમદને શાળામાં મારું મોં કેવી રીતે દેખાડું?”
મેં જે કહ્યું તે સિક્કાઓને ગમ્યું નહિ. બધા એકસાથે જ બોલવા લાગ્યા. એટલો બધો ઘોંધાટ કરી મૂક્યો કે બજારમાં પસાર થતા લોકો મારી સામે અને મારા ખિસ્સા સામે તાકી રહ્યા. મેં એ ચારેયને મજબૂત પકડીને મારી મુઠ્ઠીમાં દાબી દીધા, અને પછી તેઓ શાંત પડ્યા. પણ થોડું આગળ ચાલીને મેં મારી પકડ ઢીલી કરી. તરત જ સૌથી જૂના સિક્કાએ કહ્યું, “હવે મને પ્રામાણિકપણે કહે કે તને પેલી ગરમાગરમ જલેબી ખાવાનું મન નથી થતું?
અને તું આજે અમને વાપરી નાખીશ તો તને કાલે સ્કૉલરશિપના પૈસા તો મળવાના જ છે ને? ફીના પૈસાથી મીઠાઈ અને સ્કૉલરશિપના પૈસાથી ફી.” “તમે જે કહો છો તે સાચું નથી”, મેં કહ્યું, “પણ તે ખોટું પણ નથી. સાંભળો, હું કોઈ સામાન્ય પ્રકારનો છોકરો નથી.” સિક્કાઓએ દલીલ કરતાં કહ્યું, “પણ તો પછી પેલી જલેબી પણ સામાન્ય જલેબી નથી. જલેબી કડક, તાજી અને મીઠા રસથી ભરપૂર છે.”
એ દિવસે સિક્કાઓ વપરાઈ જવા માટે એટલા આતુર હતા, કે તેમણે એમના પ્રયત્નો ચાલુ રાખ્યા. છેવટે હું દુકાન પર દોડી ગયો. હું ખૂબ ગભરાઈ ગયો હતો, પણ મેં કંદોઈને એક રૂપિયાની જલેબી ઝડપથી તોળવા કહ્યું. કંદોઈએ એક આખુંય છાપું પાથર્યું અને તેના પર જલેબીનો ખડકલો કર્યો.
આ રીતે જલેબી ખાવાનો છોકરાનો નિર્ણય તમને ગમ્યો? શા માટે? જલેબીને મારી છાતી સરસી દબાવી હું એક ગલીમાં દોડી ગયો. એક સલામત ખૂણે પહોંચીને મેં જલેબી આરોગવા માંડી. મેં એટલી બધી … એટલી બધી જલેબી ખાધી કે જો કોઈ મારા પેટને જરા પણ દબાવત તો જલેબી મારા કાન અને નસકોરામાંથી બહાર કૂદી પડત.
બહુ ઝડપથી આખાય લત્તામાંથી છોકરાઓ ગલ્લીમાં એકઠા થઈ ગયા. ત્યાં સુધીમાં તો મારા જલેબીથી ભરેલા પેટથી હું એટલો ખુશ હતો કે કંઈક ગમ્મત કરવાના મિજાજમાં આવી ગયો. આસપાસના છોકરાઓને હું જલેબી વહેંચવા લાગ્યો. હું કંદોઈની દુકાને દોડી ગયો અને બીજા એક રૂપિયાની જલેબી ખરીદી લાવ્યો અને એક ઘરના ચબૂતરા પર ઊભા રહીને બાળકોને છૂટથી જલેબી વહેંચવા લાગ્યો.
હવે છોકરાઓનું એક મોટું ટોળું મને ઘેરી વળ્યું. ભિખારીઓએ પણ હુમલો કર્યો. બાકી બચેલા બે રૂપિયાની પણ જલેબી હું ખરીદી લાવ્યો અને તેમને વહેંચી દીધી. પછી મેં જાહેર નળ પર મારા હાથ અને મોં ધોયાં અને જિંદગીમાં જાણે કે ક્યારેય જલેબીની કલ્પના કરી ન હોય તેવા નિર્દોષ ચહેરે ઘરે આવ્યો. જલેબી પચાવવી એ એક બીજી બાબત હતી. રાત્રે મારે વાળ પણ કરવું પડ્યું.
પરિણામે પેટના દુખાવાથી કણસતો હું આખી રાત જલેબીના ગૂંચળાની જેમ પડી રહ્યો. ઈશ્વરનો આભાર કે ચારેય રૂપિયાની જલેબી મારે જ ખાવાની ન હતી. સવારે, બીજા કોઈ પણ દિવસની માફક, હું સ્કૂલે ગયો. હું જાણતો હતો કે તે દિવસે મને અગાઉના મહિનાની સ્કૉલરશિપ મળવાની હતી, અને એક વાર એ રકમમાંથી હું ફી આપી દઉં કે જલેબી પૂરેપૂરી પચી જશે. પણ હું શાળાએ પહોંચ્યો ત્યારે મને ખબર પડી કે સ્કૉલરશિપ તો આવતા મહિને અપાવાની હતી. મારું માથું ભમવા લાગ્યું.
હવે આ છોકરાને તમારી શી સલાહ છે? માસ્ટર ગુલામ મોહમદે જાહેર કર્યું કે ફી રિસેસ દરમિયાન લેવામાં આવશે. રિસેસનો બેલ વાગતાં જ હું સ્કૂલમાંથી રવાના થઈ ગયો, અને ક્યાંય સુધી ચાલતો રહ્યો. છેવટે હું રેલવે સ્ટેશન પર પહોંચ્યો. મેં અલ્લા મિયાંને બંદગી કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. ‘આ એક જ વાર મને બચાવી લો. ફરિતાને હુકમ ફરમાવો કે એ મારી પાસેથી પસાર થઈને મારા ખિસ્સામાં માત્ર ચાર રૂપિયા સરકાવી જાય. હું વચન આપું છું કે હું તેનો ઉપયોગ જલેબી ખાવામાં નહિ પણ માત્ર મારી ફી આપવામાં જ કરીશ.”
રેલવેના પાટા પાસે એક છાંયડાવાળું ઝાડ હતું. આખીયે બાબત પહેલાં તો સાવ સાદી લાગતી હતી : ફીના પૈસામાંથી જલેબી અને સ્કૉલરશિપના પૈસામાંથી ફી. મને જો ખબર હોત કે સ્કૉલરશિપ આવતા મહિને મળવાની હતી તો જલેબી ખાવાનો કાર્યક્રમ આવતા મહિના પર મુલતવી રાખત. જલેબી ખાવાના ગુના માટે મારી જિંદગીમાં પહેલી વાર હું સ્કૂલમાં ગેરહાજર રહ્યો. ત્યાં ઝાડ નીચે બેસીને પહેલાં તો હું રડુ રડુ થઈ ગયો. પછી મને જ્યારે એ ખ્યાલ આવ્યો કે જે આંસુ પડતાં હતાં તે આંસુ નહોતાં પણ જલેબીના રસનાં ટીપાં હતાં ત્યારે મને હસવાનું મન થઈ આવ્યું.
હું ત્યાંથી ઊભો થયો અને બજારમાં ગયો અને સ્કૂલ બેલ વાગવાની રાહ જોઈ, જેથી છોકરાઓ બહાર આવે ત્યારે હું પણ તેમની સાથે ચાલીને શાળાએથી જ આવ્યો હોઉં તેવું લાગે. બીજે દિવસે પણ એમ જ કર્યું. કપડાં પહેરી ઘેરથી નીકળીને સ્કૂલના દરવાજા સુધી જઈને ત્યાંથી રેલવે સ્ટેશને જવા વળી ગયો. એ જ ઝાડ નીચે બેસીને એ જ બંદગી કરવા લાગ્યો. મેં વારંવાર અરજ કરી, “અલ્લા મિયાં!
ઓછામાં ઓછું આજે તો મને એ આપો. આજે બીજો દિવસ છે.” પછી મેં કહ્યું, “સારું, ચાલો, આપણે એક રમત રમીએ. અહીંથી હું પેલા સિગ્નલ સુધી જઈશ. તમે છૂપી રીતે પેલા મોટા પથ્થર નીચે ચાર રૂપિયા મૂકી દેજો. હું સિગ્નલને. અડીને પાછો આવીશ.”
હું સિગ્નલ સુધી જઈને હસતાં હસતાં પાછો આવ્યો. આખરે બિસમિલ્લાહ કહીને મેં પથ્થરને ઊંચક્યો ને એક મોટા વાળવાળું જીવડું ઊભું થયું. હું ચીસ પાડીને દોડી ગયો. હું પકડાઈ ગયો. મારી ગેરહાજરીની ખબર ઘરે પહોંચી ગઈ હતી. પછી શું બન્યું તેનું વર્ણન કરવું વ્યર્થ છે. આ પછી ઘેર અને શાળામાં શું બન્યું હશે?
આ પછી ઘેર અને શાળામાં શું બન્યું હશે? સારું, જે કંઈ થયું તે થયું. પણ સાતમા કે આઠમા ધોરણ સુધી હું વિચારતો રહ્યો કે અલ્લા મિયાંએ મને તે દિવસે ચાર રૂપિયા મોકલી આપ્યા હોત તો કોઈને શું નુકસાન થયું હોત? વખત જતાં હું એ નિષ્કર્ષ પર આવ્યો કે જો આપણે જે કંઈ માગીએ તે અલ્લા મિયાં આપે તો આજે પણ માણસ કાગડાની પેઠે માળામાં રહેતો હોત અને જલેબી બનાવવાની કલા શીખ્યો ન હોત! – જલેબી હંમેશાં મીઠી નથી હોતી.

Very quickly, boys from the entire neighbourhood assembled in the gali. By that time I was so pleased with my stomach full of jalebis that I got into the mood for some fun.
I started handing out jalebis to the children around. I dashed to the halwai and bought one more rupee worth of jalebis, came back and stood on the chabutara of one of the houses, liberally distributing jalebis to the children. By now there was a huge mob of children around me. The beggars too launched an assault! I bought jalebis for the remaining two rupees as 1 well and distributed them. [Page 7]
