MP Board Class 9th English Solutions Chapter 8 On Killing a Tree
SUMMARY IN INGLISH
“On Killing a Tree” is a sensitive poem. The poet persuades the reader not to destroy trees and equates it with “killing” a human being. He says that a plant takes sunlight, water, air and nutrients from the soil to gradually become a huge tree. It develops a strong trunk and gets numerous leaves. Merely cutting the trunk of the tree does not kill it. When a tree is cut, the sap flows out just like a wounded man bleeds. Once the wound heals, new branches and tiny leaves grow from there which grow into trees.
In order to destroy a tree, it has to be uprooted. The roots which are white in colour and are damp due to the moisture that they get from the soil are hidden in a pit in the Earth. These roots are the most sensitive part of the tree as they bind it to the earth. In order to kill the tree, these roots have to be detached from the soil.
Once the roots are detached, the tree starts dying, It withers, dries up with the action of heat and wind, twists, hardens and finally, dies.

Answers
1. No, it can’t. It is because the bark of the tree will heal on its own after some time.
2. It has consumed the earth and fed on its crust. It has absorbed light, air and water for years. The words are consuming, feeding, absorbing sunlight, air and water.
3. ‘Bleeding bark’ means the bark giving out juice etc., after it is cut. A knife’s or axe’s cut makes it bleed.
4. By ‘No’ he means to say that to kill a tree one should not hack, chop or jab it with a knife.
5. Anchoring earth means the earth that gives protection to the tree. The earth, that is, the soil keeps the tree in its grip and gives life to it. ‘Earth cave’ means a hole inside it. This looks like a small cave. The tree has its roots in it.
6. The strength of the tree are its roots. When the tree is pulled out, the roots are exposed.
7. Pulling out the tree in one jerk with ropes etc, and searching it finally kills the tree.
