UK Board 10th Class English – (Poetry) – Chapter 4 How to Tell Wild Animals

This humorous poem suggests some dangerous ways to identify (or ‘tell’) wild animals ! Read it aloud, keeping to a strong and regular rhythm.

अगर आपको पूरब के जंगलों में जाने का अवसर प्राप्त हो (और) यदि आपकी ओर एक लम्बा और भूरे रंग का पशु आगे की ओर बढ़े, अगर वह आप पर इस प्रकार दहाड़े कि आप मरने को हो जाएँ तो आप यह जान जाएँगे कि वह एशियायी शेर है।

और यदि किसी समय (कभी) इधर-उधर घूमते हुए एक राजसी जंगली पशु से आपका सामना हो जाए, जिसकी पीली सतह पर काली धारियाँ हों, तो यह ध्यान रखें कि यह आपको खा सकता है। सबसे सरल नियम आपको यह जानने में मदद करेगा कि यह बंगाल का बाघ है।

यदि आगे बढ़ते हुए एक जंगली पशु आपको दिखाई दे, जिसकी चमड़ी पर तमाम गोल निशान पड़े हुए हैं और देखते ही देखते यह आप पर छलांग लगा दे; आप यह जान लें कि यह तेंदुआ है। वह दहाड़ने का बड़ा कार्य न करके केवल बार-बार छलांग लगाएगा।

यदि आप अपने आँगन में घूम रहे हैं और वहाँ पर आपको एक पशु मिल जाता है जो आपसे चिपटकर बहुत अधिक स्नेह दिखाता है तो विश्वास करें कि यह एक भालू है। यदि आपको कोई सन्देह होता है, तो मेरा विश्वास है कि वह आपको पुनः आलिंगनबद्ध कर लेगा ।

एक नौसिखिए को शिकारी पशुओं के अन्तर को स्पष्ट करने में असमंजस हो सकता है। एक लकड़बग्घे से मगरमच्छ की पहचान करने के लिए इस रूप में समझ सकते हैं — लकड़बग्घे हँसते हैं (इनकी हँसी आदमी के समान होती है) और मगरमच्छ घड़ियाली आँसू बहाते हैं।

एक वास्तविक गिरगिट एक छिपकली की भाँति छोटा जीव होता है, उसके कान भी नहीं होते, और पंख भी नहीं होते । यदि पेड़ पर कुछ नहीं है, तो भी वहाँ गिरगिट होगा ।

It is a humorous poem. The poet suggests some dangerous ways to identify wild animals. The suggested ways create humour. He says if ever you visit the jungles in the east and you happen to encounter a lion, a tiger or a leopard, you’ll be able to identify them by the way they attack you. ‘Identifying while dying’—the idea makes you laugh.

He also tells you to identify a bear from its friendly, hard bear-hug, a hyena from its laugh and crocodile from its weeping while swallowing its victim. If you see nothing on the tree then there is a chameleon as it has the quality to change its colour according to its surroundings.

Ans. The poet mentioned wild animals in the poem “How to Tell Wild Animals”: They are the lion, the tiger, the bear, the hyena, the leopard and the chameleon. The crocodile is a water animal.

Ans. A chameleon is a harmless creature of the tree. It is like a lizard. It is without ears. It does not even possess a single wing. It is simple and friendly in nature.
