This poet tells us that he feels more at home with animals than humans, whom he finds complicated and false.

( कवि का मानना है कि उसे पशुओं का साथ इनसानों के साथ से अधिक अपनेपन का अहसास कराता है, क्योंकि उसकी नजर में इनसान संकीर्ण और बनावटी होते हैं। )

मैं सोचता हूँ कि काश ! मैं मुड़ सकता और पशुओं के साथ रह सकता, वे’ बहुत शान्त और अपने आप में मस्त रहने वाले होते हैं, मैं खड़ा होकर उनको बहुत लम्बे समय तक देखता रहता हूँ।

वे अपनी स्थिति के बारे में न तो दुःखी होते हैं न कराहते हैं, वे रातों को जागकर अपने द्वारा किए गए पापों के लिए नहीं रोते हैं, वे भगवान के प्रति अपने कर्त्तव्य के बारे में बात करके और वस्तुओं को अपनाने की ललक के कारण मुझे दु:खी नहीं करते हैं, उनमें से कोई दूसरों के आगे घुटने नहीं टेकता है, और न ही उन्होंने कभी हजारों वर्षों पहले ऐसा किया, उनके लिए सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर कोई भी सम्माननीय और दुःखी नहीं है।

अतः वे मेरे प्रति अपना सम्बन्ध बताते हैं और मैं उनको स्वीकार करता हूँ। वे मुझे संकेत देते हैं और वे अपने अधिकार क्षेत्र वाली वस्तुओं को स्पष्टता से सिद्ध भी करते हैं। कवि कहता है कि मैं हैरान हूँ उन्हें वे संकेत कहाँ से प्राप्त होते हैं। क्या मैं बहुत समय पहले उस रास्ते से गुजरा हूँ और उन्हें लापरवाही से छोड़ दिया।

From ‘Song of Myself in Leaves of Grass

The poet desires to live among the animals because they are serene and self contained. They are too wise to bewail over their condition. They weep for their sins and do their duty towards God.

The animals are always satisfied. They do not possess the mania of possessing things. They do not show respect for the others. They even do not respect their thousand old ancestors. They are equal in sorrow and happiness.

The poet has a deep desire to learn for the animals, since they show their deep concern with them. They give him respect in the shape of a token and show their plain feelings. They do not have any kind of falsehood. The poet is much surprised at their quality. He want to earn them though he had dropped them carelessly.

They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,

They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God.

1. ‘They’ in these lines stands for the animals.

2. (i) Animals do not grudge about their condition.

(ii) They do not cry over their sins, and

(iii) They do not bore others by discussing their duty towards God.

Ans. The poet feels more at home with animals than human beings because animals are complete in all respects. They are serene and calm. They do not murmur over their lot. They are satisfied. with what they have.

(कवि मनुष्यों की अपेक्षा पशुओं के साथ अधिक अच्छा अनुभव करता है क्योंकि पशु सभी पहलुओं से पूर्ण हैं। वे स्वच्छ और शान्त हैं। वे अपने भाग्य पर नहीं बुदबुदाते । जो कुछ उनके पास है वे उससे सन्तुष्ट हैं।)

Ans. Man in his greed to collect wealth and fulfil selfish motives spends sleepless night and dissatisfied lives. He grudges and complaints and has no peace of mind. Animals lead a much peaceful and self contained life, so the poet wants to live with them.

( मनुष्य ने अपने धन एकत्रित करने के लालच में और स्वार्थपूर्ण उद्देश्यों की पूर्ति में अनेक रातें बिना सोए बिताई हैं और असन्तुष्ट रहा है । इसलिए वह गुर्राता और शिकायत करता है और उसका मस्तिष्क शान्त नहीं है। पशुओं का जीवन बहुत शान्तिपूर्ण और स्वनिर्धारित है। इसलिए कवि उनके साथ रहना चाहता है।)

(कवि ‘एनीमल्स’ कविता द्वारा क्या सन्देश देना चाहता है ? )

Ans. The poet wants to convey the message that man should live a happy, contented, peaceful life like the animals. He should not indulge in gathering wealth. It will make him selfish, greedy, commit sins, repent on his behaviour and follies and spend sleepless nights.

( कवि यह सन्देश देना चाहता है कि मनुष्य को पशुओं की भाँति प्रसन्न, सन्तुष्ट और शान्तिपूर्ण जीवन व्यतीत करना चाहिए। उसे धन एकत्रित करने में नहीं लगना चाहिए। यह उसको स्वार्थी, लालची पापी अपने व्यवहार पर पछताने वाला और मूर्ख बना देगा और उसे रातें बिना नींद के गुजारनी होंगी। )
