Wanda Petronski was a poor Polish girl. She lived on Boggins heights. She joined an American school. She was different from other girls in many ways. Her name was uncommon. She was a quick girl and had no friends. She wore the same pale blue dress everyday.

Wanda used to sit in the corner on last but one seat of the classroom where noisy and rough boys who get low marks sat. There was a lot of dirt, mud and scuffling of feet in that area.

Peggy and Maddie were close friends. Peggy was pretty, had curly hair and wore beautiful dresses. She was the most liked girl of Wanda’s class. She often made fun of Wanda by asking her questions about her hundred dresses in a polite voice. Maddie wanted Peggy to stop teasing Wanda but she could never muster courage to tell her this. She used to feel uncomfortable for that. Perhaps it reminded for of her own poverty.

Wanda though a quiet girl was quiet vocal about her hundred dresses. She told the girls that her dresses were made of velvet or silk. All had different colours and designs. She specially mentioned her two dresses one pale blue with coloured trimings and the other bright, green and red dash.

Wanda’s absence from school was not noticed for two days but on the third day Peggy and Maddie who missed the fun of laughing at her, waited for her at the corner of the Oliver Street where they used to meet her on their way to school. But Wanda did not turn up and they got late for school.

Next day Peggy and Maddie did not wait for Wanda. They never wanted to be late for the school because they were anxious to know the result of the competition. It was announced that day.

As they entered their classroom they stopped. Hundred drawings of bright, beautiful and differently designed dresses were displayed all over the room. Every one who entered the room murmured with admiration.

Miss Mason announced the result. Among the boys, Jack Boggles had won and among the girls Wanda Patronski. She asked the students to give her a special applause (though she was not present to enjoy it). She had submitted 100 sketches and each sketch was worth of winning the best prize.

आज सोमवार को वान्डा पैत्रोन्सकी अपनी जगह पर नहीं थी। किन्तु किसी ने भी, न ही पैगी और मैडीलीन ने, वे लड़कियाँ जिन्होंने यह मजाक शुरू किया था, उसकी अनुपस्थिति को महसूस किया। अधिकतर वान्डा कमरा नं० 13 की अन्तिम कतार की आखिरी सीट अगली वाली सीट पर बैठती थी। वह कमरे के कोने में बैठती थी जहाँ पर कम अंक पाने वाले बुरे लड़के बैठा करते थे, कमरे का वह कोना जहाँ जूते के घिसटने की सबसे अधिक आवाज और यदि कुछ मजाक की बात होती थी जो हँसी के ठहाकों की सबसे अधिक आवाज आती थी और जहाँ पर फर्श पर कीचड़ और धूल सबसे अधिक होती थी ।

वान्डा वहाँ पर इसलिए नहीं बैठी थी क्योंकि वह बहुत रूखी और शोर मचाती थी। इसके विपरीत, वहं बहुत शान्त थी और शायद ही किसी को कुछ कहती थी। किसी ने भी उसे जोर से हँसते हुए नहीं सुना था । कभी-कभी वह अपने मुँह को टेढ़ा-मेढ़ा घुमाकर शैतानी से मुस्करा देती थी, बस केवल इतना ही वह करती थी ।

कोई भी वास्तव में यह नहीं जानता था कि वान्डा उस सीट पर क्यों बैठती थी। शायद इसलिए कि वह बौगिन्स हाइट्स से आई थी और उसके पैर हमेशा सूखी मिट्टी से सने होते थे। किन्तु जब एक बार वह कमरे के कोने में बैठने लगी तो किसी ने भी वान्हा पैत्रोन्सकी के बारे में वास्तव में नहीं सोचा।

स्कूल का समय समाप्त होने के बाद दोपहर में स्कूल से वापस जाते समय या प्रातः स्कूल शुरू होने से पहले, जब दो या तीन या उससे भी अधिक बच्चों की टोली में बातें करते और हँसते हुए स्कूल के रास्ते में होते, उन्हें वान्डा का ध्यान आता था।

तब कभी-कभी वे वान्डा का इन्तजार करते थे— उसका मजाक उड़ाने के लिए।

अगले दिन मंगलवार को भी वान्डा स्कूल में उपस्थित नहीं थी और किसी ने फिर से उसकी अनुपस्थिति अनुभव नहीं की ।

लेकिन बुधवार को, पैगी और मैडी ने जो अच्छे अंक पाने वाले बच्चों के साथ आगे बैठती थीं, और जिनके ऊपर मिट्टी का जरा-सा भी निशान नहीं था, वान्डा की अनुपस्थिति को पहचाना। पैगी स्कूल की सबसे लोकप्रिय लड़की थी। वह सुन्दर थी, उसके पास सुन्दर कपड़े थे और उसके बाल घुंघराले थे। मैडी उसकी सबसे घनिष्ठ दोस्त थी । वान्डा की अनुपस्थिति पैगी और मैडी ने इसलिए पहचानी क्योंकि वान्डा ने उन्हें स्कूल के लिए देर करवा दी थी। उन्होंने उसका मजाक उड़ाने के लिए उसका इन्तजार किया और वह नहीं आई।

वान्डा का कोई मित्र नहीं था। वह स्कूल अकेले आती थी और घर भी अकेले जाती थी। वह सदैव फीके नीले रंग की एक पोशाक पहने रहती थी जो सही तरीके से फिट भी नहीं थी। वह साफ थी किन्तु ऐसा प्रतीत होता था मानो उसे कभी प्रेस (इस्तरी) न किया गया हो। उसके कोई दोस्त नहीं थे, किन्तु बहुत-सी लड़कियाँ उससे बात करती थीं। कभी-कभी, उसे वे लोग स्कूल के मैदान में घेर लेते थे जब वह छोटी लड़कियों को कठोर मैदान पर सटापू का खेल खेलते देखती थी।

” वान्डा’, पैगी इतनी शिष्टता से बोलेगी मानो वह किसी मिस मेसन से बात कर रही हो । “वान्डा”, अपने एक मित्र को इशारा करते हुए, बोलेगी, “हमें बताओ। तुमने कितनी पोशाकें, हमें बताई थीं जो तुम्हारी अलमारी में टँगी हुई हैं?”

“वे सब किस तरह की हैं? सभी रेशमी होंगी, शर्त लगाती हूँ।” पैगी ने कहा।

“हाँ, सभी रेशमी हैं, सभी रंगों की हैं। “

” मखमल की भी हैं?”

“हाँ, मखमल की भी हैं। एक सौ पोशाकें” वान्डा ने भावशून्य तरीके से दोहराया।

“सभी मेरी अलमारी में एक कतार में टँगी हैं। “

तब वे सभी उसे जाने देते और जब वह अधिक दूर तक नहीं गई होती, वे कर्णभेदी और जोर की हँसी से फूट पड़ने से अपने आपको नहीं रोक पाते।

एक सौ पोशाकें ! वास्तव में, वान्डा के पास जो केवल पोशाक थी वह भी नीली वाली जो वह हर रोज पहनती थी। तो वह क्यों कहती थी कि उसके पास एक सौ हैं? क्या कहानी है?

” तुमने कितने बताए तुम्हारे पास कितने जूते हैं? “

पैगी वास्तव में कठोर नहीं थी। वह छोटे बच्चों को शक्तिशाली लोगों से बचाती थी और वह घण्टों तक रोती यदि वह किसी पशु के साथ बुरा व्यवहार होते देखती। यदि कोई उससे कहता, “क्या तुम्हें नहीं लगता कि वान्डा के साथ तुम्हारा व्यवहार कठोर है?” तो वह हैरान हो जाती । कठोर ? उस लड़की ने यह क्यों कहा कि उसके पास एक सौ पोशाकें हैं? कोई भी यह बता सकता है कि यह एक झूठ है। वह झूठ क्यों बोलना चाहती है? और वह कोई मामूली इन्सान नहीं है नहीं तो उसका इस तरह का नाम क्यों होता ? यद्यपि, उन्होंने उसे कभी रुलाया नहीं ।

वान्डा के लिए, वह बस एक ऐसी लड़की थी जो बोगिन्स हाइट्स पर रहती थी और स्कूल में अकेली खड़ी रहती थी। उसने शायद ही कभी किसी से कोई बात की होगी। स्कूल के मैदान में वह केवल तब ही बोलती थी जब वह अपनी सौ पोशाकों के बारे में बात करती थी। मैडी ने उसको याद किया जब वह उसकी एक पोशाक के बारे में बात कर रही थी जोकि हल्के नीले रंग की थी जिसमें रंगीन झालर लगी हुई थी। और उसने उसकी एक ओर पोशाक याद की जोकि सुन्दर जंगली हरे रंग के साथ लाल रंग वाली थी। “तुम उसमें बिल्कुल क्रिसमस ट्री की तरह नजर आओगी,” लड़कियों ने नाटकीय भाव के साथ कहा।

Ans. Peggy, the most-liked girl and classmate of Wanda invented this game. Infact, Wanda used to wear the same dress everyday. In order to tease her Peggy asked, “How many dresses you have ?” “Hundred” pat came the reply. Peggy was amused. She thought Wanda was telling a lie. She started making fun of her. Other girls joined too.

The game became a regular source of entertainment for the girls. They asked her more questions about her dresses. Without feeling embarrassed Wanda described her dresses and told them that they were all lined up in her closet.

The girls would burst into shrieks peels of laughter.

(सबकी पसन्दीदा लड़की और वान्डा की सहपाठिनी पैगी ने इस खेल का आविष्कार किया था। वास्तव में वान्डा एक ही पोशाक रोज पहनती थी। उसको चिढ़ाने के लिए पैगी ने उससे पूछा, “तुम्हारे पास कितनी पोशाकें हैं? तुरन्त जवाब आया – सौ ।” पैगी खुश थी। उसने सोचा वान्डा झूठ बोल रही थी। उसने उसका मजाक उड़ाना शुरू कर दिया। अन्य लड़कियाँ भी शामिल हो गईं।

यह खेल लड़कियों के लिए नियमित मनोरंजन का साधन बन गया। उन्होंने उससे उसकी पोशाकों के बारे में और प्रश्न पूछे। परेशान हुए बिना वान्डा ने अपनी पोशाकों का वर्णन किया और कहा कि वे सभी एक कतार में अलमारी में हैं।

Ans. Wanda Patronski was a poor, polish girl. She joined an American school. Other students thought her to be different from them in many ways. Her name was uncommon. She wore the same blue dress everyday.

She was a quiet girl but sat with noisy, rough boys who scored low marks. If there was fun in the class, they roared with laughter but she only smiled.

She did not mind being made fun of. She never felt embarrassed or cried. She was cool headed and tolerant.

Sne did not have any friends but many girls talked, to her asking more questions about her dresses which they thought were imaginary. Wanda was most vocal while describing her dresses.

She was a talented, creative artist and won the girls medal in the art competition.

( वान्डा पैत्रोन्सकी एक गरीब, पोलिश लड़की थी। उसने एक अमेरिकन स्कूल में प्रवेश लिया। अन्य विद्यार्थी अनेक दृष्टियों से उसे अपने से अलग समझते थे। उसका नाम असामान्य था। वह एक ही नीली पोशाक रोज पहनती थी।

वह एक शान्त लड़की थी लेकिन शोर करने वाले उन गन्दे लड़कों के साथ बैठती थी जिन्हें कम अंक मिलते थे। यदि कक्ष में कोई मजाक होता था तो वे (लड़के) ठहाका मारकर हँसते थे किन्तु वह (वाडा) सिर्फ मुस्कराती थी।

वह अपना मजाक बनने की कभी परवाह नहीं करती थी। वह कभी परेशानी अनुभव नहीं करती थी और न चिल्लाती थी। वह शान्त मस्तिष्क की और सहनशील थी ।

उसका कोई मित्र नहीं था लेकिन अनेक लड़कियाँ उससे बात करती थीं उसकी पोशाकों के बारे में प्रश्न पूछती थीं जिनके बारे में वे सोचती थीं कि वह काल्पनिक है। वान्डा जब अपनी पोशाकों का वर्णन करती थी तो बहुत बोलती थी।

वह प्रतिभाशाली, रचनात्मक कलाकार थी और कला प्रतियोगिता में लड़कियों के वर्ग का पदक जीता था। )

Ans. Maddie was the classmate of Wanda. She was Peggy’s inseparable friend. Both were always seen together. She was poor and wore hand-me-down clothes.

She did not like Peggy’s making fun of Wanda. She used to feel uncomfortable, perhaps it reminded her of her own poverty.

She was not courageous. Once she wrote a note to Peggy asking her to stop teasing Wanda but she tore it. She was afraid that Peggy and other girls would make her the next target.

She had a high opinion about Peggy. She thought the most liked girl could never do something really wrong. She also thought that Peggy would win the girls medal in the art competition.

(मैडी वान्डा की सहपाठिका थी। वह पैगी की अभिन्न मित्र थी। दोनों सदैव साथ देखी जाती थीं। वह (मैडी) गरीब थी और दान में मिले हुए पुराने कपड़े पहनती थी।

वह पैगी द्वारा वान्डा का मजाक बनाया जाना पसन्द नहीं करती थी। वह असुविधा अनुभव करती थी, शायद उसे अपनी गरीबी याद आ जाती थी।

पैगी के सम्बन्ध में उसका मत बहुत ऊँचा था। वह सोचती थी कि वह (पैगी) सबकी पसंदीदा लड़की है कभी कोई गलत कार्य नहीं करेगी। वह यह भी सोचती थी कि कला प्रतियोगिता में पैगी लड़कियों के वर्ग का पदक जीतेगी। )
