When the class was watching Wanda’s beautiful sketches of dresses. Miss Mason received note from Wanda’s father. It gave the information about Wanda’s leaving the school since they had shifted to a big city.

The note also had an indirect complaint. It said no one will make fun of her name and call ‘Pollack’ to her because there would be many funny names and foreigners like her in a big city.

The whole class was silent. Miss Mason was unhappy and upset. She said that she hoped none in the class purposely hurt someone because his/her name happened to be unfamiliar. And that what was said in thoughtlessness. She expected everyone to think about the whole matter.

Maddie could not concentration in her study in the first period because she felt guilty. She had stood by silently when Peggy and other girls teased Wanda-asking questions about her hundred dresses. She knew it was wrong but was too coward to object to it. She wanted to meet and tell Wanda that she never meant to hurt her.

Peggy was not sensitive and emotional as Maddie, but she, too, wanted to meet Wanda. After school, both headed for Boggins Heights where Wanda lived.

Boggins Heights was a wet and sad place. The white house where Petronski lived had a deserted look. It was clean but shabby like Wanda’s blue dress.

On their way to Wanda’s house, Peggy had tried to console herself by saying at least she did not make fun of her name or called her a foreigner.

While returning she said that perhaps her asking questions about Wanda’s dreses had given her ideas for her drawing. She might not have even won the contest.

Maddie could not sleep that night, she was thinking about Wanda, her house and her beautiful drawings and Peggy’s idea about them which she thought was unfair. She could not make amends for hurting Wanda but she took a resolve―Never to stand silently when anyone treated unkindly a person on account of his/her funny face or name. She would try never to make anybody unhappy again.

That Saturday afternoon both wrote a letter to Wanda. They wanted to write a letter feeling sorry but it turned to be a friendly letter. She told her about her winning the contest and that everyone liked and appreciated her drawings.

They asked her how she liked her new place and new teacher. They signed it with lots of X’s for love.

They did not receive any reply from Wanda. Perhaps she was angry. Peggy almost forgot about it but Maddie did not. She often went to sleep giving speeches or safe guarding Wanda from the teasers.

Near Christmas Miss Mason received a letter from Wanda wishing Happy Christmas. She said that she missed the school and the new teacher did not equalise Miss Mason. She asked her to keep the drawings for the class as a gift, give the drawing of the green dress of Peggy and the blue one to Maddie.

Both Peggy and Maddie were happy to receive the special gifts. They understood that Wanda had received their letter. She liked them and was not angry with them.

Maddie when hung the drawing in her room remembered Wanda who had been nice to them though they had teased her. Tears came to her eyes. Then she looked closely at the drawing and found that her face was drawn on that. She ran to Peggy and saw Peggy’s face on Peggy’s gift. So Wanda had specially drawn those sketches for them. She liked them.

मिस मेसन एक क्षण के लिए वहाँ खड़ी रहीं और कमरे की शान्ति गम्भीर और उम्मीद से भर गई । अध्यापिका ने अपने चश्मे को धीरे से और सप्रयास ठीक किया। उसके व्यवहार से समझ में आ रहा था कि क्या आने वाला है—यह, वान्डा के पिता का पत्र – एक बहुत गम्भीर विषय था। जब मिस मेसन ने यह संक्षिप्त पत्र पढ़ा तो सभी ने ध्यानपूर्वक सुना-

आदरणीय अध्यापिका,

मेरी वान्डा अब आपके विद्यालय में और नहीं आएगी। जेक भी नहीं । अब हम बड़े शहर में जा रहे हैं। अब ‘पोलक’ कहकर कोई नहीं चिल्लाएगा। अब कोई नहीं पूछेगा कि यह मजाकिया नाम क्यों। बड़े शहर बहुत – ‍ – से मजाकिया नाम होते हैं। में

इस पत्र को पढ़ने के बाद एक गहरी नीरवता छा गई। मिस मेसन ने अपना चश्मा उतार दियां, उस पर फूँक मारी और उसने मुलायम सफेद रूमाल से उसे पोंछा फिर उसने उसे फिर से पहन लिया और कक्षा की ओर देखा। जब वह बोली उसकी आवाज बहुत धीमी थी।

भगवान! क्या कुछ ऐसा नहीं था जो वह कर सकती थी? केवल वह वान्डा को इतना ही बता पाए कि उसका इरादा उसकी भावनाओं को ठेस पहुँचाने का नहीं था। वह दूसरी ओर मुड़ी और नजर चुराते हुए पैगी की ओर देखा, किन्तु पैगी ने ऊपर नहीं देखा। वह बहुत ध्यानपूर्वक पढ़ती हुई प्रतीत हो रही थी। खैर, पैगी को बुरा लगा हो या नहीं, उसे मैडी को तो कुछ न कुछ करना ही था। उसे वान्डा पैत्रोन्सकी को ढूँढना था। हो सकता है कि वह अभी तक वहाँ से दूर न गई हो। हो सकता है कि पैगी उसके साथ हाइट्स पर चढ़े और वह वान्डा को बता पाएँ कि उसने प्रतियोगिता जीत ली कि वे सोचते थे कि वह होशियार थी और वे सौ पोशाकें खूबसूरत थीं।

जब दोपहर में स्कूल समाप्त हुआ, पैगी ने लापरवाही जताते हुए कहा, “हे, चलो चलते हैं और देखते हैं कि वह लड़की कस्बा छोड़कर चली गई है या नहीं। “

अर्थात् पैगी का भी यही विचार था। मैडी खुश हो गई। पैगी बिल्कुल ठीक थी।

दोनों लड़कियाँ जल्दी से बिल्डिंग से बाहर आयीं, गली में से बोगिन्स हाइट्स की ओर बढ़ने लगीं, कस्बे का वह हिस्सा जहाँ पर नवम्बर की इस प्रकार की दोपहर में भी ऐसी गन्दी हवा थी, गीला और उदास वातावरण था ।

“चलो, आखिरकार”, पैगी ने रूखे स्वभाव में कहा, “मैंने उसे कभी विदेशी कहकर नहीं बुलाया था या कभी उसके नाम का मजाक नहीं उड़ाया था। मैंने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि उसमें इतनी समझ थी यह जानने की कि हम उसका मजाक बना रहे हैं। मुझे लगा कि वह बहुत ही ज्यादा बुद्ध थी । और देखो वह कितनी अच्छी चित्रकारी कर सकती है।”

मैडी कुछ नहीं कह पाई। वह जो उम्मीद कर रही थी कि वह यह कि वे वान्डा को ढूँढ पाएँ। वे उसे बताना चाहती थीं कि वे शर्मिन्दा हैं कि उन्होंने उसे तंग किया और सम्पूर्ण स्कूल उसे बहुत बढ़िया मानता था, और कृपया वह वहाँ से न जाए और सभी उसके साथ अच्छा व्यवहार करेंगे। वह और पैगी उससे लड़ेंगे जो उससे अच्छा व्यवहार नहीं करेगा।

घर में किसी के होने का निशान तक नहीं था। पैगी ने मजबूती से दरवाजा खटखटाया किन्तु कोई जवाब नहीं आया। वह और मैडी घूमकर घर के पिछवाड़े गई और वहाँ खटखटाया, अब भी कोई जवाब नहीं था ।

इसके बारे में कोई शक नहीं था। पैत्रोन्सकी जा चुके थे। अब वे कैसे बता पाएँगी कि वे शर्मिन्दा थे ?

वे धीरे से घूमे और पहाड़ी से नीचे वापस अपने रास्ते चल पड़े। ” खैर, कोई बात नहीं” पैगी ने कहा, “अब वह चली गई तो अब हम क्या कर सकते हैं? इसके अलावा, जब मैं उसकी सभी पोशाकों के बारे में पूछ रही थी, उसे शायद अपनी चित्रकारियों के लिए अच्छे विकल्प मिल रहे थे। वरना, उसने शायद यह प्रतियोगिता नहीं जीती होती।”

शनिवार को मैडी ने दोपहर पैगी के साथ गुजारी। वे वान्डा पैत्रोन्सकी को पत्र लिख रही थीं। वह केवल एक मित्रता वाला पत्र था जोकि प्रतियोगिता के बारे में था और यह बताता था कि वान्डा उस प्रतियोगिता को जीत गई। उन्होंने उसे बताया कि उसकी चित्रकारियाँ बहुत सुन्दर थीं और, उन्होंने उससे पूछा कि क्या उसे वह जगह पसन्द आई है जहाँ पर वह रह रही है और क्या उसे अपनी नई अध्यापिका पसन्द है? उनका मतलब यही था कि वे माफी माँगना चाहती थीं, किन्तु वह पत्र केवल एक मित्रता भरा पत्र बनकर ही समाप्त हो गया। इस प्रकार का जोकि उन्होंने अपने किसी अच्छे मित्र को लिखा हो और उन्होंने उसे स्नेह के साथ अनेक अजनबियों के (X’s) के हस्ताक्षर किए। उन्होंने वह पत्र बोगिन्स हाइट्स पर पोस्ट कर दिया, उसके लिफाफे पर ‘कृपया आगे भेजें’ लिख दिया।

दिन गुजर गए और कोई जवाब नहीं आया, किन्तु वह पत्र भी वापस नहीं आया, इसका मतलब शायद वान्डा को वह प्राप्त हो गया होगा। शायद वह गुस्से में हो और उसे इतना बुरा लगा हो कि वह कभी भी जवाब नहीं देगी। तुम उस पर आरोप नहीं लगा सकते।

अब क्रिसमस का समय था और सारे मैदान में बर्फ थी। क्रिसमस की घण्टियों और एक छोटे-से पेड़ से कक्षा सजी हुई थी। छुट्टियाँ शुरू होने से पहले स्कूल के आखिरी दिन, अध्यापिका ने कक्षा को एक पत्र दिखाया जो उसे उसी सुबह प्राप्त हुआ था ।

“तुम्हें याद है वान्डा पैत्रोन्सकी, वह प्रतिभाशाली छोटी कलाकर जिसने चित्रकला प्रतियोगिता जीती थी? खैर, उसने मुझे एक पत्र लिखा हैं और मैं यह जानकर खुश हूँ कि वह कहाँ रहती है, क्योंकि अब मैं उसे उसके मैडल भेज सकती हूँ। मैं उसका पत्र तुम्हारे लिए पढ़ना चाहती हूँ।”

उसकी आँखों में आँसू झिलमिला गए और वह लम्बे समय तक उस चित्र को टकटकी लगाए देखती रही। फिर जल्दबाजी में उसने अपनी आँखें पोंछीं और उसको उत्सुकतापूर्वक ध्यान से अध्ययन करने लगी। पोशाक के रंग इतने गहरे थे कि उसने उस चित्र के चेहरे और सिर पर लगभग न के बराबर ध्यान दिया था किन्तु वह उसके जैसा प्रतीत होता था, मैडी। वह वास्तव में उसके मुँह के जैसा दिखता था । वह क्यों उसके जैसा दिख रहा था। वान्डा ने सचमुच वह उसके लिए ही बनाया था। खुशी के मारे वह पैगी की ओर भागी ।

“पैग’, उसने कहा, “मैं तुम्हारी तस्वीर देखूँ । ”

Ans. Peggy and Maddie were classmates and good friends. They sat on front seats in class, were seen together everywhere. They were called inseparable friends but they were different from each other in many ways. Peggy was the most liked girl. She was pretty, rich and had many beautiful dresses. Maddie was poor and wore second hand dresses.

Peggy liked teasing Wanda asking her questions about her hundred dresses. Maddie thought teasing wrong but was coward. She did not have the courage to stop it. She had pricks of conscience and considered herself more guilty for standing by silently.

Maddie was much more sensitive than Peggy. When they did not get any reply to their letter to Wanda Peggy forgot soon but Maddie spent many sleepless nights giving speeches and safeguarding Wanda from unkind treatment.

Maddie was more loving. She remembered Wanda often. Wanda’s gift brought tears to her eyes. Thus, we see that Peggy and Maddie though inseparable friends were different in many ways.

पैगी को वान्डा से उसकी सौ पोशाकों के सम्बन्ध में प्रश्न पूछकर उसे परेशान करना पसन्द था। मैडी सोचती थी कि तंग करना गलत है लेकिन बुजदिल थी। उसमें उसे रोकने का साहस नहीं था। उसके अन्तःकरण को चुभन होती थी और वह बगल में चुपचाप खड़े रहने के कारण अपने को अपराधी मानती थी।

पैगी की तुलना में अधिक भावुक थी। जब वान्डा से उन्हें अपने पत्र का उत्तर नहीं मिला तो पैगी शीघ्र ही भूल गई किन्तु मैडी ने अनेक रातें बिना नींद के बिताईं भाषण देते हुए और निर्दयी व्यवहार से वान्डा की रक्षा करते हुए ।

मै बहुत प्यारी थी। वह वान्डा को अक्सर याद करती थी । वान्डा के उपहार ने उसकी आँखों में आँसू ला दिए थे। इस प्रकार हम देखते हैं कि यद्यपि पैगी और मैडी अभिन्न मित्र थीं किन्तु वे अनेक तरह से एक-दूसरे से अलग थीं। )

Ans. Peggy was a rich and pretty girl with curly hair. She was the most liked girl in her class. She had many beautiful dresses. She was intelligent, good in studies, scored good marks and sat on the front seat. She could understand the hidden message of Wanda’s gifts that she liked her. Wanda was not angry with them.

She loved fun and enjoyed teasing Wanda, playing the game of hundred dresses with her.. She thought Wanda was not hurt as she never cried or felt embarrassed. She was not cruel for she would cry for hours if she saw any animal being mistreated.

She was a self-righteous girl. She thought she did nothing wrong teasing Wanda. Any how, she never made fun of her names or called her a foreigner.

(पैगी एक धनवान और घुंघराले बाल वाली लड़की थी। अपनी कक्षा की वह सबसे पसन्दीदा लड़की थी। उसके पास अनेक सुन्दर पोशाकें थीं। वह होशियार, अध्ययन में अच्छी और अच्छे अंक लाने वाली लड़की थी और सामने वाली सीट पर बैठती थी। वह वान्डा के उपहार छिपे सन्देश को समझती थी और वह उसे पसन्द करती थी। वह उनसे नाराज नहीं थी ।

वह कला को प्यार करती थी और सौ पोशाकों का खेल खेलते हुए उसे वान्डा को परेशान करने में आनन्द आता था। उसका विचार था कि वान्डा को ठेस नहीं पहुँचती थी क्योंकि वह न तो कभी चिल्लाई और न परेशानी अनुभव की। वह निर्दयी भी नहीं थी क्योंकि यदि कभी वह किसी पशु के साथ दुर्व्यवहार होता देखती थी तो वह घण्टों चिल्लाती थी।

वह धर्मपरायण लड़की थी। वह सोचती थी कि उसने वान्डा को परेशान करके कोई गलत कार्य नहीं किया। जो कुछ भी हो उसने उसके नाम का मजाक नहीं उड़ाया और न कभी उसे विदेशी कहा। )

Q. 3. Do you think Wanda enjoyed playing the Game of Hundred dresses ? How / How not ?

(क्या आपके विचार में वान्डा सौ पोशाकों का खेल खेलना पसन्द ‘ करती थी? कैसे / कैसे नहीं ? )

Ans. I think Wanda enjoyed playing the game of hundred dresses invented by Peggy. She came to school in the same dress everyday. When Peggy asked her “How many dresses do you have?” She was reminded of her hundred sketches-all lined up in her closet so she replied, “Hundred”. Peggy must have been surprised at the answer. Her reaction amused Wanda. Peggy teased further asking more questions about her dresses.

Wanda loved describing her drawings of dresses. The otherwise silent, girl became vocal. The other girls also joined the fun. They thought that Wanda was telling a lie and using her imagination while describing her dresses. The fact that Wanda never felt embarrassed or cried showed that she was not hurt. The interest which she took is describing them shows that she enjoyed the game of hundred dresses.

(मेरा विचार है कि पैगी द्वारा आविष्कृत सौ पोशाकों के खेल में वान्डा आनन्द लेती थी। वह एक ही पोशाक में रोज स्कूल आती थी। जब पैगी उससे पूछती “तुम्हारे पास कितनी पोशाकें हैं?” उसको अपने उन सौ पोशाकों के रेखाचित्रों का स्मरण हो आता था जो उसकी अलमारी में कतार में टँगी थीं, इसलिए वह उत्तर देती “सौ” । पैगी इस उत्तर से आश्चर्यचकित हो जाती थी। उसकी प्रतिक्रिया में वान्डा आनन्द लेती थी। पैगी उसकी पोशाकों के सम्बन्ध में आगे और प्रश्न पूछकर उसे परेशान करती थी ।

वान्डा को अपनी चित्रकारी के रेखाचित्रों का वर्णन करना बहुत अच्छा लगता था। अन्य लड़कियाँ भी इस खेल में शामिल हो जाती थीं। वे सोचती थीं कि वान्डा झूठ बोल रही थी और अपनी पोशाकों का वर्णन करने में अपनी कल्पना का उपयोग कर रही थी। वास्तविकता यह थी कि वान्डा ने कभी परेशानी अनुभव नहीं की और न ही वह चिल्लाई — इससे पता चलता है कि उसको ठेस नहीं पहुँची थी। उनका वर्णन करने में वह जितनी रुचि लेती थी, यह बताता है वह सौ पोशाकों के खेल में आनन्द लेती थी। )

Q.4. What had Wanda’s father written in his letter to Miss Mason? What was its effect on Miss Mason, her class specially Peggy and Maddie ?

( वान्डा के पिता ने मिस मेसन को पत्र में क्या लिखा? उसका प्रभाव मिस मेसन, उसकी कक्षा, विशेषतया पैगी और मैडी पर क्या हुआ ? )

Ans. In the letter to Miss Mason, Wanda’s father had given the information that Wanda and her brother Jake would not be coming to school as they have shifted to a big city. He also complained indirectly by saying that in the big city no one will make fun of them for having funny names or being foreigners for there would be many more like them in the city.

After reading the letter Miss Mason was not angry with the class but sad and upset. She thought none of the students must have purposely hurt Wanda and what was said was in thoughtlessness.

The class was silent and sorry. They perhaps never thought that their simple fun could have that repercussion that poor Wanda had to leave the school and the town.

Peggy and Maddie wanted to make amends so they headed to Boggins Heights after the school to Wanda’s house to say her winning the contest and everyone appreciated her drawings and request her to say and not leave. Unfortunately, Wanda had already left.

पत्र पढ़ने के बाद मिस मेसन कक्षा से नाराज नहीं थीं किन्तु दुःखी और अशान्त थीं। उन्होंने सोचा कि किसी भी विद्यार्थी ने वान्डा को उद्देश्य बनाकर ठेस नहीं पहुँचाई होगी और जो कुछ भी कहा गया होगा बिना सोचे-समझे कहा गया होगा।

कक्षा चुप और दुःखी थी। उन्होंने शायद कभी नहीं सोचा था कि उनका छोटा-सा मजाक इतना बड़ा प्रतिघात बन जाएगा कि गरीब वान्डाको स्कूल और कस्बा दोनों छोड़ने पड़ जाएँगे ।

पैगी और मैडी स्थिति सुधारना चाहती थीं इसलिए वे स्कूल के बाद वान्डा के घर बोगिन्स हाइट्स यह कहने गईं कि वह प्रतियोगिता जीत गई है और उसकी चित्रकारी की सभी ने प्रशंसा की थी। वे यह निवेदन करने भी गई थीं कि वह रुके, जाए नहीं। दुर्भाग्यवश वान्डा छोड़ चुकी थी। )

Q. 5. Maddie had never teased Wanda still she was guilty. How did she try to make amend ?

Ans. Maddie had never teased Wanda but when Peggy and other girls teased her she used to stand by silently. She never objected. Though she knew what others were doing was wrong, she could not muster courage to stop them. Thus, she became a party to their teasing. She considered herself to be more guilty for remaining silent.

She tried to make amends. She went to Wanda’s house to say her sorry personally but unfortunately she had already left. Back home she made a resolve never to remain silent if anybody tried to hurt or mistreat someone for his funny face or name. She was even ready to sacrifice her friendship with Peggy.

She also wrote a letter to Wanda along with Peggy. They wanted to write a letter to say sorry but it turned out to be a friendly letter. When they did not receive any reply, Maddie to get the burden off her mind used to give speeches safeguarding Wanda from those who mistreated her in her imagination.

उसने सुधार करने का प्रयास किया। वह वान्डा के घर निजी तौर पर दुःख व्यक्त करने गई लेकिन दुर्भाग्य से वह जा चुकी थी। घर वापस आकर उसने निश्चय किया कि यदि वह किसी को किसी के साथ उसके बुरे चेहरे अथवा नाम के लिए बुरा बर्ताव होता देखेगी तो कभी चुप नहीं रहेगी। वह इसके लिए पैगी की मित्रता का त्याग भी करने के लिए तैयार थी।

उसने पैगी के साथ वान्डा को एक पत्र भी लिखा। वे दुःख व्यक्त करने के लिए पत्र लिखना चाहती थीं किन्तु वह मित्रता के पत्र में बदल गया। जब उन्हें पत्र का कोई उत्तर प्राप्त नहीं हुआ तो मैडी ने अपने मस्तिष्क पर वान्डा को दुर्व्यवहार करने से बचाने के लिए अपनी कल्पना में भाषण देना एक वजन बना लिया। )
