[हम में से अधिकांश सर्पों को मृत्यु का भयंकर प्रतीक मानते हैं। लेकिन यहाँ इस कविता में सर्प स्वयं पीड़ित है । ]
SUMMARY OF THE POEM
A snake lay along the sand before he was observed and chased away. The snake tried to escape the pursuing stick. He glided through the water to disappear in the ripples among the green slim reeds The snake was harmless even to the children. A snake who lives in water, and is small and green is not generally harmful.
कविता का हिन्दी में अर्थ
Stanza I. The snake ……….the stroke.
सर्प अपने पतले लम्बे शरीर में अचानक मोड़ देते हुए पीछा करने वाली लाठी से बचने की कोशिश कर रहा है। उसकी आकृतियाँ कितनी सुन्दर और आकर्षक हैं। वह लाठी के प्रहार से दूर पानी से होकर फिसलता है।
Stanza II. O let him go………..to children.
उसको बिना चोट के सरकण्डों में छिपने के लिए पानी के ऊपर से जाने दो। वह छोटा है और हरा है। वह बच्चों के लिए भी हानिकर नहीं है।
Stanza III. Along the sand………………reeds.
वह रेत के साथ-साथ आराम से लेटा हुआ था। पर जब उसको देख लिया गया और उसका पीछा किया गया, वह हरी पतले सरकण्डों के बीच छोटी लहरों में गायब होने के लिए चला जाता है।
