Valli or Valliammai was a girl of eight years. She was Tamil. she was very much eager about things. She had no playmates. So standing on the door way of her house had become her favourite pastime. She watched what was happening in the street outside. Thus she had got many new experiences. But she was very much fascinated for the bus ride. It was an unending joy for her.

There travelled a bus between her village and a nearest town on an interval of an hour. She stared at the passengers who got on or off the bus. She listened to the conversation between her neighbours and the people who regularly used the bus. She asked a few questions from them. In a way she had collected some details about the bus-journey. The last destination of the bus was a town. It was about six miles from her village. The fare was thirty paise for one way. The trip to the town took forty-five minutes. So she planned to take the one o’clock afternoon bus so that she could return by about two forty-five.

On one afternoon, it was a fine spring day. The afternoon bus was on the point of leaving the village. Valli called ‘Stop the bus ! Stop the bus !’ The bus slowed down and the conductor peeped outside. He called to hurry up. Standing outside the bus, Valli told that she had to go to the town. She showed some coins and got into the bus. The conductor was a jolly fellow. He called her a fine madam and pointed towards a seat. It was the slack time of the day. So very few passengers were travelling in the bus. Then the conductor asked her if they could start the bus. All passengers were looking at the conductor and Valli. On hearing the whistle, the bus started. It was a new bus. It had a fine painting of green stripes on the white. The seats were soft and luxurious.

In the way, Valli was enjoying everything through her own eyes. The road was narrow. On one side there was a canal. Beyond it there were palm trees, grassland, mountains, sky and green fields. To have full view, she stood on the seat. All looked very wonderful for Valli. An elderly man shouted and called Valli as ‘child’.

He asked her to sit down. Valli was surprised for calling her a child. The conductor told that she was a very grown-up madam as a mere girl could not travel all alone. In an angry way, she looked towards the conductor and demand the ticket. The conductor punched a ticket and gave her. He asked her not to stand when she had paid for a seat. The bus stopped. Some passengers got on. Valli sat down on her seat lest some passengers should sit over it.

At that time, an elderly woman got into the bus. She sat beside Valli. She questioned her if she was all alone. Valli did not like her. There were big holes in her ears. The earrings were very ugly. She was chewing the betel nut. Valli was fearing lest its juice should fall at any moment. She again interrogated Valli. In turn Valli gave a curt reply and asked to mind her own business. But the old woman went on with her talk. She tried to know the house number, town and street, where she was going. Valli was much troubled. She asked her not to bother about her. Then Valli turned her face and stared outside the window.

It was her first journey. She had planned it very well. She had saved all her stray coins that come her way. She even resisted the temptation of buying toys and balloons etc. At the village fair too she controlled herself not to enjoy the ride in the merry-go-round. Thus she had collected enough money for her journey. Her next problems was to slip out of the house. She knew that her mother used to sleep daily after lunch. Valli decided to use these hours for her journey. Most often she used these hours for her excursion.

The bus was rolling across a landscape. Everything seemed to be fast running. But it was passing smoothly leaving all obstacles safely behind. Valli was happy. She clapped her hands with glee. There came a young cow, running fast, in front of the bus. The driver sounded his horn loudly. But the animal became more and more frightened. It galloped in front of the bus. It was funny for Valli. At last the cow moved off the road. The bus came to a rail road crossing. The train looked like a speck from the distant. The train passed with utmost roar and rattle. It shook the bus even. Then the bus passed through a busy shopping street and came on a wide thoroughfare. Valli was fascinated and happy to see the displays of clothes and the big crowd. She was watching everything. It was the last destination of the bus.

Now all the passengers got off the bus. Valli remained there in the bus. The conductor asked if she was not ready to get off the bus. Valli replied that she would return on this same bus and gave her thirty coins to the conductor. He felt surprised and questioned what the matter was. Valli replied that she only felt to have a ride in the bus and nothing else. The conductor was greatly amused. He requested her to go and look at the lights till the bus started. But Valli replied that she was much afraid. She went on sitting till the bus resumed its journey. She got her ticket. The same wonderful sights were before her eyes.

Then she suddenly saw a young cow dead by the road side. She enquired the conductor if it was the same cow. The conductor nodded his head. Now she was overcome with sadness. Her memory haunted her. She thought that she had been a lovely animal a little while ago but all her charm was lost. She no longer wanted to look out of the window. She glued to her seat. It was three-forty when the bus reached her village. She stood up and told the conductor to see him again. The conductor smiled and answered, “Madam, whenever you feel like bus ride, come and join us. And don’t forgot to bring your fare.” Valli laughed and went running stright for her home.

When Valli entered her house, she saw her mother talking with one of her aunts. She was from South Street. She was a chatterbox. Her mouth never stopped once she started talking. She asked Valli where she had been. Valli only smiled. Her mother remained busy with her. Both were discussing about the things outside the world. Valli told that so many things were happening without their knowledge. Her aunt was surprised and said that Valli was talking like a grown-up lady.

एक लड़की थी वल्लीअमाई जिसे छोटे नाम से वल्ली कहते थे। वह आठ वर्ष की थी और उसे चीजों के बारे में जानने की जिज्ञासा थी। उसका समय व्यतीत करने का सुखद तरीका था, अपने घर के सामने के दरवाजे पर खड़े होकर यह देखना कि बाहर गली में क्या हो रहा है। उसकी गली में, उसके साथ खेलने वाला उसकी उम्र का कोई साथी नहीं था और यही सब कुछ उसे करना होता था ।

किन्तु वल्ली के लिए सामने के दरवाजे पर खड़े होना उतना ही मजेदार था जितना कि दूसरे बच्चों के लिए कोई बड़ा खेल खेलना। गली को देखने से उसे अनेक विचित्र अनुभव होते थे।

सबसे अधिक आकर्षित करने वाली वस्तु थी वह बस जो उसके गाँव और निकट के कस्बे के बीच में चलती थी। वह प्रत्येक घण्टे, एक बार कस्बे में जाते समय और एक बार वापस आते समय, उसकी गली में से गुजरती थी। बस की झलक, हर बार नए यात्रियों से भरी हुई, उसके लिए (वल्ली) कभी न समाप्त होने वाली खुशी का स्रोत थी।

प्रतिदिन वह बस को देखती और धीरे-धीरे उसके दिमाग में एक छोटी-सी इच्छा ने जन्म लिया और वह (इच्छा) बढ़ने लगी। वह केवल एक बार उस बस में यात्रा करना चाहती थी। यह इच्छा बढ़ती चली गई जब तक यह एक खुशी से भरी चाहत नहीं बन गई। जब बस गली के मोड़ पर रुकती, तो वल्ली उदासी से लोगों को उसमें चढ़ते और उतरते देखती । उनके चेहरे उसकी इच्छाओं, सपनों और उम्मीदों में आग लगाते थे। यदि कभी उसके किसी मित्र को बस की सवारी का अवसर मिलता और वह उसको कस्बे के दृश्यों का वर्णन करना चाहता तो वल्ली को इतनी जलन होती कि वह सुनना भी नहीं चाहती और अंग्रेजी में चिल्ला उठती, “प्राउड ! प्राउड !” (घमण्डी ! घमण्डी ! ) न तो वह स्वयं और न ही उसके मित्र असल में उस शब्द का वास्तविक अर्थ जानते थे किन्तु वे इसे प्राय: अपनी अप्रसन्नता प्रकट करने के लिए उपयोग करते थे।

निरन्तर कई दिनों और महीनों तक वल्ली ने अपने पड़ोसियों और लोगों से, जो निरन्तर बस से आते-जाते थे, ध्यानपूर्वक बातें सुनीं और उसने कुछ गम्भीर सवाल भी इधर-उधर से पूछे। इस प्रकार उसने बस यात्रा की छोटी-छोटी अनेक जानकारियाँ प्राप्त कर लीं। कस्बा उसके गाँव से छह मील दूर था। एक तरफ का किराया तीस पैसे था – “जोकि कुछ भी नहीं है,” यह उसने एक अच्छी पोशाक पहने व्यक्ति को कहते सुना था, किन्तु वल्ली के लिए, जो एक महीने से अगले महीने तक मुश्किलों से ही इतने पैसे देख पाती थी, यह एक बहुत बड़ी रकम थी। कस्बे तक की यात्रा में 45 मिनट लगते थे। कस्बे तक पहुँचने पर यदि वह अपनी सीट पर बैठी रहे और दूसरे तीस पैसे दे दे तो वह उसी बस में घर वापस लौट सकती है। इसका मतलब कि उसे दोपहर एक बजे वाली बस पकड़नी पड़ेगी, पैंतालीस मिनट में कस्बे में पहुँचेगी और लगभग दो बजकर पैंतालीस मिनट पर वापस घर…..

उसके विचार बढ़ते ही चले गए जैसे-जैसे वह हिसाब और पुनः हिसाब लगाती, तैयारी और फिर तैयारी करती…..।

अन्ततः, एक सुहाने वसन्त के दिन, जब दोपहर की बस गाँव को छोड़कर मुख्य राजमार्ग पर पहुँचने ही वाली थी कि तभी एक छोटी-सी आवाज चिल्लाती हुई सुनाई दी- “बस को रोको! बस को रोको!” और दृढ़तापूर्वक एक छोटा-सा हाथ उठा ।

बस धीमी होकर रेंगने लगी और परिचालक ने अपना सिर दरवाजे से बाहर निकाल कर कहा, “फिर जल्दी करो! जिसे भी आना हो जल्दी आए।”

“ये मैं हूँ,” वल्ली चिल्लाई, “मुझे ही बस में चढ़ना है।

अब तक बस रुक गई थी और परिचालक ने कहा, “ओह, सचमुच ! तुमने ऐसा नहीं बताया।”

“हाँ, मुझे सिर्फ कस्बे तक जाना है,” वल्ली ने कहा, जो अब भी बस के बाहर खड़ी थी, “और यह रहे मेरे पैसे!” उसने उसे कुछ सिक्के दिखाए।

“अच्छा, अच्छा, पर पहले तुम्हें बस में चढ़ना होगा।” परिचालक ने कहा, और उसने उसे ऊपर चढ़ाने में मदद के लिए अपना हाथ बढ़ा दिया।

“कोई बात नहीं,” उसने कहा, “मैं अपने आप चढ़ सकती हूँ। तुम्हें मेरी मदद करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।”

परिचालक एक खुशमिजाज और मजाक पसन्दीदा इनसान था । “ओह! कृपया मुझसे नाराज न हों, मेरी प्रिय मैडम,” उसने कहा । “यहाँ,” सबसे आगे वाली सीट आपके लिए है। सभी कृपया एक तरफ हो जाएँ– मैडम के लिए रास्ता बनाएँ। “

वह दिन का मन्दा समय था और बस में केवल छह या सात सवारियाँ ही थीं। वे सभी वल्ली को देख रहे थे और परिचालक के साथ हँस रहे थे। वल्ली संकोच से भर उठी। सबकी नजरों से बचती हुई, वह चुपचाप जाकर एक खाली सीट पर बैठ गई।

“क्या अब हम चलें मैडम ?” परिचालक ने मुस्कराते हुए पूछा। तब उसने अपनी सीटी दो बार बजाई और बस एक शोर करती हुई आवाज के साथ चल पड़ी।

वह एक नई बस थी, उसका बाहरी भाग चमकदार सफेद रंग से पुता था और उसके किनारों पर हरी धारियाँ थीं । अन्दर, सिर के ऊपर डण्डे चाँदी की भाँति चमक रहे थे। वल्ली के बिल्कुल सामने, आगे वाले शीशो के ऊपर, एक सुन्दर घड़ी थी। सीटें नरम और आरामदायक थीं।

वल्ली हरएक चीज को अपनी नजरों में सँवार रही थी। किन्तु जब खिड़की के निचले भाग में लगा पर्दा दखल दे रहा था। इसलिए वह सीट उसने बाहर देखना शुरू किया तो उसने देखा कि उसके दृश्यों में उसकी पर खड़ी हो गई और पर्दे के ऊपर से देखने लगी।

बस अब नहर के किनारों से जा रही थी। सड़क बहुत संकरी थी । एक ओर नहर थी और उसके आगे, खजूर के पेड़, घास के मैदान, दूर पहाड़ और नीला नीला आकाश था। दूसरी ओर एक खाई थी और फिर कई एकड़ हरे खेत, हरा हरा, जहाँ तक नजरें देख पाएँ।

आह, वह सब कितना सुन्दर था !

अचानक वह एक आवाज से भौंचक्की रह गई । “सुनो बच्ची,” आवाज ने कहा, “तुम्हें इस प्रकार खड़े नहीं होना चाहिए। बैठ जाओ।”

बैठने के बाद, उसने देखा कि कौन उससे बोल रहा है। वह एक बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति था जो सचमुच में उसके प्रति चिन्तित था । किन्तु उसे उसके ध्यान देने से बुरा लगा।

“यहाँ पर कोई ऐसा नहीं है जो एक बच्चा हो,” वह गर्व से बोली। “मैंने सभी की तरह अपने तीस पैसे दिए हैं। “

परिचालक बीच में बोला, “ओह, सर, लेकिन यह एक बहुत बड़ी मैडम हैं। क्या आपको लगता है कि एक बच्ची अपना किराया अपने आप दे सके और पूरे शहर में अकेले यात्रा कर सके ?”

वल्ली ने परिचालक की ओर गुस्से से देखा और कहा, “मैं मैडम नहीं हूँ। कृपया यह याद रखें और आपने अब तक मुझे मेरा टिकट नहीं दिया है।”

“मैं याद रखूँगा,” परिचालक ने उसकी आवाज की नकल करते हुए कहा। सभी हँस पड़े, धीरे-धीरे वल्ली भी उस हँसी में शामिल हो गई।

परिचालक ने एक टिकट काटा और उसको थमा दिया। “बस पीछे होकर बैठ जाओ और अपने आपको आराम में कर लो। तुम क्यों खड़ी हो जब तुमने सीट के लिए भुगतान किया है?”

“क्योंकि मैं चाहती हूँ,” उसने फिर खड़े होते हुए उत्तर दिया।

“किन्तु यदि तुम सीट पर खड़ी रहोगी तो तुम गिर सकती हो और तुम्हें चोट लग जाएगी जब बस तीव्र मोड़ पर मुड़ेगी या गड्ढे में से निकलेगी। इसलिए हम चाहते हैं कि तुम बैठ जाओ, बच्ची !”

” मैंने आपसे कहा न मैं बच्ची नहीं हूँ,” उसने चिड़चिड़ाकर कहा – “मैं आठ वर्ष की हूँ।”

“बिल्कुल, बिल्कुल! मैं भी कितना मूर्ख हूँ। आठ वर्ष-ओह ओह !”

बस रुक गई, कुछ नए यात्री ऊपर चढ़े, और परिचालक कुछ समय के लिए व्यस्त हो गया। अपनी सीट खो जाने के डर से वल्ली अन्ततः बैठ गई।

एक बूढ़ी महिला आकर उसकी बगल में बैठ गई । “क्या तुम बिल्कुल अकेली हो, बेटी ?” उसने बस के पुनः चलने पर वल्ली से पूछा।

वल्ली को वह महिला बिल्कुल भी पसन्द नहीं आई—उसके कानों में इतने बड़े-बड़े छेद थे, और उनमें काफी गन्दे बुन्दे थे और उसे उस औरत के मुँह से सुपारी की बदबू आ रही थी जो वह चबा रही थी और उसे उसके मुँह में सुपारी का रस दिख रहा था जो किसी भी क्षण उसके होठों से बाहर गिर सकता था। ओह! ऐसे इनसान के साथ कौन घुल-मिल सकताहै?

“हाँ, मैं बिल्कुल अकेली यात्रा कर रही हूँ,” उसने रूखा-सा उत्तर दिया, “और मेरे पास टिकट भी है। “

“हाँ, वह कस्बे में जा रही है,” परिचालक बोला, “तीस पैसे के टिकट के साथ।”

“ओह तुम अपने काम में ध्यान क्यों नहीं लगाते,” वल्ली ने कहा। किन्तु वह उसी समय हँस पड़ी और परिचालक भी हँस पड़ा।

किन्तु उस वृद्ध महिला ने अपनी बक-बक जारी रखी। “क्या एक छोटे बच्चे के लिए अकेले यात्रा करना सही है? क्या तुम सही जानती हो. कि तुम्हें कस्बे में कहाँ पर जाना है ? कौन-सी गली में? घर का नम्बर क्या है?”

“आपको मेरी चिन्ता करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। मैं अपना ध्यान स्वयं रख सकती हूँ,” वल्ली ने अपना चेहरा खिड़की की ओर घुमाकर बाहर देखते हुए कहा ।

उसकी पहली यात्रा — कितने ध्यानपूर्वक, परिश्रम से विस्तृत योजनाएँ बनानी पड़ी थीं। उसने बहुत मितव्ययिता से, जितने भी पैसे उसे मिलते, बिना खर्च किए सभी प्रलोभनों जैसे पिपरमिन्ट, खिलौने, गुब्बारे और ऐसी बहुत-सी चीजों को खरीदने से बचाकर इकट्ठे किए और अन्तत: उसने कुल मिलाकर साठ पैसे जोड़ लिए। कितना मुश्किल रहा होगा, खासकर जब गाँव में उस दिन मेला लगा था, किन्तु उसने गोल वाले चक्कर झूले पर झूलने की अपनी प्रबल इच्छा को अपने दृढ़ निश्चय से रोका यद्यपि उसके लिए उसके पास पैसे थे।

जब उसने काफी पैसा बचा लिया उसकी अगली समस्या थी माँ की जानकारी के बिना घर से कैसे खिसका जाए। किन्तु बिना खास कठिनाई के उसने इसका भी प्रबन्ध कर लिया। हर रोज दोपहर के खाने के बाद उसकी माँ लगभग एक से चार बजे के बीच सोया करती थी । वल्ली उस समय प्रायः दरवाजे पर खड़े रहकर, बाहर घूमकर और कभी-कभी गाँव घूमने का साहस कर बिताया करती थी। आज वही समय गाँव से बाहर घूमकर बिताया जा सकता था।

बस अब खाली भूदृश्यों से लुढ़कती जा रही थी, अब एक छोटे से पुरवा के बीच से गुजर रही थी या एक सड़क किनारे की अजीब-सी दुकान को पार करती जा रही थी। कभी ऐसा लगता था कि बस सामने से आने वाली दूसरी गाड़ी को या पैदल रास्ता पार करने वाले यात्रियों के ऊपर चढ़ जाएगी। किन्तु ! किसी तरह वह सभी रुकावटों को पीछे छोड़ती हुई आराम से चलती गई। पेड़ उसकी ओर भागते प्रतीत होते थे किन्तु जैसे ही बस उन तक पहुँचती वे रुक जाते और असहाय से एक ओर खड़े रह जाते और फिर दूसरी दिशा में चले जाते ।

अचानक वल्ली खुशी के मारे तालियाँ बजाने लगी। एक गाय, हवा में पूँछ उठाए, सड़क के बीचों-बीच, बहुत तेजी से सीधी बस के सामने भागती जा रही थी। बस धीमी होकर रेंगने लगी, और ड्राइवर बार-बार जोर से हॉर्न बजाने लगा। किन्तु जितना ज्यादा वह बजाता, उतना ज्यादा वह पशु डर जाता और अधिक जोर से कूदता – हमेशा बिल्कुल बस के सामने।

हँसती रही, और हँसती रही जब तक उसकी आँखों से आँसू नहीं गिरने वल्ली के लिए यह किसी तरह बहुत हास्यप्रद लग रहा था। वह लगे।

“बहन जी क्या आप काफी नहीं हँसती?” परिचालक बोला, “कुछ कल के लिए बचा लो तो बढ़िया रहेगा । “

अन्ततः गाय रास्ते से हट गई। और जल्द ही बस एक रेल के फाटक पर पहुँच गई। दूर से रेलगाड़ी का निशान देखा जा सकता था जो जैसे-जैसे वह निकट आई (निशान) बड़ा और बड़ा होता चला गया। तब वह उस . फाटक से एक भयंकर गुर्राहट और झिंझोड़ने और बस को हिलाने के साथ गुजर गई। तब बस चली और रेल स्टेशन को पार किया। वहाँ से वह मुड़ गई— एक व्यस्त सुशोभित दुकानों की गली में और मुड़कर घुसी – एक चौड़ी व्यस्त सड़क पर | इतनी बड़ी चमकदार दुकानें ! कपड़े और दूसरा बेचने का सामान कितनी चमक के साथ सजाया हुआ था। इतरी सारी भीड़ !

हैरानी से बुत बनकर खड़ी वल्ली प्रत्येक वस्तु को घूरने की कोशिश कर रही थी।

तब बस रुकी और हर कोई उतर गया सिवाय वल्ली के ।

“श्रीमती जी!” परिचालक ने कहा, “क्या आप उतरने के लिए तैयार नहीं हैं? आपके तीस पैसे आपको इतनी ही दूर तक लेकर आते हैं।”

“नहीं,” वल्ली ने कहा, “मैं इसी बस से वापस जाऊँगी।” उसने दूसरे तीस पैसे अपनी जेब से निकाले और परिचालक को दे दिए।

“क्यों, क्या कोई बात है ?”

“नहीं, कोई बात नहीं है, मुझे केवल बस की यात्रा करने की इच्छा थी, बस ।”

“अब तुम यहाँ पर हो तो क्या तुम इन दृश्यों को नहीं देखना चाहती ?”

“सब अपने आप? ओह, मुझे डर लगता है।”

लड़की के बोलने के तरीके से परिचालक बहुत हैरान होता हुआ बोला, “किन्तु तुम्हें बस में आने में डर नहीं लगा । “

“इसमें डरने की कोई बात नहीं थी,” उसने उत्तर दिया।

“तो फिर वहाँ पर जो दुकान है उस पर क्यों नहीं जाती और कुछ पीने के लिए क्यों नहीं लेती? उसके बारे में भी डरने की कोई बात नहीं है।”

“ओह, नहीं, मैं ऐसा नहीं कर सकती । “

“खैर, तो फिर मैं तुम्हारे लिए एक ठण्डा – पेय ले आता हूँ।”

“नहीं, मेरे पास ज्यादा पैसे नहीं हैं। बस मुझे मेरी टिकट दे दो।”

“यह मेरी ओर से पार्टी होगी और तुम्हें इसकी कोई कीमत नहीं देनी पड़ेगी।”

“नहीं, नहीं,” उसने जोर देकर कहा, “कृपया नहीं ।”

परिचालक ने अपने कन्धे झटकाए और उन्होंने तब तक इन्तजार किया जब तक वापस यात्रा करने का समय नहीं हो गया। पुन: वहाँ पर अधिक यात्री नहीं थे।

“क्या तुम्हारी माँ तुम्हें ढूँढ नहीं रही होगी?” परिचालक ने पूछा जब उसने उस लड़की को उसकी टिकट दी ।

“नहीं मुझे कोई नहीं ढूँढ रहा होगा,” उसने कहा ।

बस चल पड़ी और फिर से वही सुन्दर दृश्य आए।

वल्ली जरा-सी भी बोर नहीं हुई थी और उसने सभी चीजों का पुनः उसी रुचि के साथ स्वागत किया जैसे कि उसने पहली बार किया था, लेकिन अचानक उसने देखा एक जवान गाय सड़क के किनारे मरी पड़ी थी, बिल्कुल वहीं पर जहाँ किसी तेज आती गाड़ी ने उसे टक्कर मारी होगी।

“क्या यह वही गाय नहीं है जो हमारी कस्बे की यात्रा के समय हमारी बस के सामने भाग रही थी?” उसने परिचालक से पूछा ।

परिचालक ने सिर हिलाया, और वह उदासी से भर गई। थोड़ी देर पहले तक जो प्यारा, सुन्दर – सा जीव था, किन्तु अब अचानक से इसने अपनी सुन्दरता और जीवन खो दिया है और कितना डरावना, कितना भयंकर यह वहाँ पड़ा हुआ लग रहा है, टाँगें खुली हुईं, बेजान आँखों में थमी हुई नजरें और चारों तरफ खून……

बस चलती रही। मरी हुई गाय की यादें उसे बार-बार सता रही थीं, उसके जोश को अब मन्द कर रही थी। वह अब और खिड़की से बाहर नहीं देखना चाहती थी।

इसलिए वह अपनी सीट पर चिपककर बैठ गई, जब तक बस उसके गाँव तीन बजकर चालीस मिनट पर नहीं पहुँच गई। वह खड़ी हुई और अंगड़ाई ली। फिर वह परिचालक की ओर मुड़ी और कहा, “खैर, श्रीमान आपसे फिर मिलने की उम्मीद करती हूँ।”

Ans. The following lines in the text tell us that Valli was enjoying her ride on the bus.

1. While the bus was moving on a narrow road along the bank of a canal, she saw distant mountains, fields, sky and so on. She went on seeing as far as her eyes could see. She uttered, “Oh, it was all so wonderful.”

2. The bus was rolling on cutting across a bare landscape and was gobbling up another vehicle. The bus left everything safely, Valli suddenly clapped her hands with glee.

3. There came a cow, it ran faster at the horn and came right before the bus. This scene was made her laugh until there were tears in her eyes. The conductor said, ‘Hey, lady, better save some for tomorrow’.

4. The bus passed the shopping street. There were displays of clothes and other merchandise! Such big crowds !

Struck dumb with wonder, Valli gaped at everything.

Ans. While on her way back, Valli saw a young cow lying dead by the roadside. This scene was horrible and frightening. There was a fixed stare in her lifeless eyes with blood all over. It memory haunted her very much. She lost all her enthusiasm and excitement. She no longer wanted to look out of the window.

(वल्ली ने लौटते समय रास्ते में एक जवान गाय को सड़क के किनारे मृतक पड़े हुए देखा। यह दृश्य भयानक और डराने वाला था। उसकी जीवनहीन आँखें स्थिर हो गई थीं और चारों ओर खून था। उसकी याद ने उसे बहुत चोट पहुँचाई। उसने अपना सारा उत्साह और उमंग खो दी। अब वह और खिड़की के बाहर नहीं देखना चाहती थी । )

(वल्ली ने जब यह कहा कि “जो आप कह रहे हैं कि बहुत-सी घटनाएँ घट रही हैं जिनकी हमें जानकारी नहीं है, इस विचार से मैं सहमत हूँ।” तो उसका क्या तात्पर्य था ? )

Ans. Valli when said so only meant to agree with the thoughts of her mother. Her mother was saying that there are many things in this world which happen without our knowledge and even if we know few of them, it is not possible to understand them completely.

(वल्ली ने जब ऐसा कहा तो सिर्फ उसका अर्थ अपनी माँ के विचारों से सहमति जताना था। उसकी माँ कह रही थी कि संसार में अनेक चीजें हैं जो हमारी जानकारी के बिना घटित हो जाती हैं और यदि उनमें से हम कुछ को जान भी लेते हैं तो उनको पूरी तरह समझना असम्भव है।)

Ans. The author has rightly describe many things from an eight years old Valli’s point of view. Some of the sentences can be mentioned as under:

1. On seeing her one of her friends describing the sights, Valli would shout “proud ! proud !!

2. From the regular bus commuters, she would ask a few discreet questions here and there.

3. And here’s my money.

4. I can get on by myself. You don’t have to help me.

5. There’s nobody here who’s a child.

6. Ugh ! who could be sociable with such a person.

7. “No, no one will be looking for me,” she said.

7. उसने कहा, “नहीं, मेरी कोई प्रतीक्षा नहीं कर रहा होगा । ” )

Ans. Valli was a eight year old girl. She had no playmates in the street. Her favourite pastime was to stand at the doorstep of her house, watch things, people and their activities. She not only satisfied her curiosity but also gained new experiences.

Valli was a girl of strong determination. She was fascinated by the bus that came to the village every hour. She developed a desire and then longing turning into determination to ride the bus.

She, meticulously planned for it-gathered information about the distance, time and ticket money. Showing self restrain, she resisted the temptation to buy peppermint, toys or a ride on merry-go-round. Thus she saved 60 paise for the bus journey.

The way she stops the bus, boards it without the conductors, heep and refuses his free treat reveals her commanding, confident, self-dependent and self respecting nature. Her enthusiasm and excitement to look out at the outside scenery shows that she knows how to enjoy herself.

She is sensitive, too. Her spirits are dampened and she becomes sad to see a dead cow.

Though a child she behaves like a mature person. She does not like to be called a child.

(वल्ली आठ वर्षीय एक ग्रामीण लड़की है। उसका गली में कोई साथी नहीं है। उसका पसन्दीदा काम घर के दरवाजे पर खड़े होकर चीजों, लोगों और उनकी गतिविधियों को देखना था। वह सिर्फ अपनी जिज्ञासा ही सन्तुष्ट नहीं करती थी, वरन् नए अनुभव भी प्राप्त करती थी।

वल्ली एक दृढ़ निश्चयी लड़की थी। वह प्रति घण्टे गाँव आने वाली बस के प्रति आकर्षित थी। उसने एक इच्छा विकसित की और एक उत्कंठा जो बस में सवारी करने का दृढ़ निश्चय बन गई।

उसने बहुत सावधानी से इसके लिए योजना बनाई — दूरी, समय और टिकट के पैसे की जानकारी एकत्रित करके । स्व-नियन्त्रण करके उसने पिपरमेंट, खिलौने या गोल घूमने वाले झूले के प्रलोभनों का त्याग कर दिया। इस प्रकार उसने बस यात्रा के लिए साठ पैसे बचा लिए ।

बस को रोकने का ढंग, परिचालक की सहायता के बिना बस पर चढ़ना और उसकी निःशुल्क सेवा से इनकार उसकी दृढ़ता, आत्म-विश्वास, आत्मनिर्भर और स्वाभिमानी प्रकृति का परिचय मिलता है। बाहर के दृश्यों को देखने में उसकी उत्सुकता और उत्साह यह दर्शाते हैं कि स्वयं का मनोरंजन कैसे करना चाहिए वह जानती है।

वह भावुक भी है। उसका मन उदासी से भर जाता है और वह दुःखी हो जाती है जब वह मृत गाय को देखती है। यद्यपि वह बच्ची है, किन्तु उसका व्यवहार परिपक्व व्यक्ति जैसा है। वह बच्ची कहलाना पसन्द नहीं करती।)
