Introduction: ‘If I Were You’ is a melodrama. There are only two characters-Gerrard and the intruder. Both resemble each other. The intruder has killed a policeman. He intends to murder Gerrard and then impersonate him.

SUMMARY OF THE LESSON IN ENGLISH.
This is the story of the intruder who entered the house of a playwright. He, however, did not know that the owner of the house was a playwright. He only knew him as Gerrard. He came to know some things about Gerrard at Aylesbury where he saw Gerrard in the car. He found that Gerrard resembled him.
The intruder was a criminal. He had killed a policeman. He decided to kill Gerrard and then live himself as Gerrard. He therefore, broke into the house of Gerrard one day. Gerrard was preparing to leave the house. He was going to attend a rehearsal of his drama. He had kept necessary props for the rehearsal in his travelling bag.
The intruder threatened Gerrard with his revolver. The intruder explained to Gerrard his plan to kill him and then live in his house as Gerrard. When the intruder was about to shoot him, he warned him to be. careful. He told the intruder that he were also a murderer. The police were after him. In case, he killed Gerrard, he was sure to be hanged as himself or as Gerrard. This made the intruder to think.
Gerrard asked him to hurry and run with him in his car to a safer place as the police were likely to come there soon. Gerrard opened a door to show him the man who would inform him about the arrival of the police. The intruder leaned forward. As the intruder turned his head, Gerrard pushed him into the cupboard and slammed the door and locked it.
Then Gerrard phoned the police and informed about the intruder. Then he outwitted the fellow.

जिरार्ड – अच्छा, उसे कह दो कि वह सीधे मुझको फोन करे। मुझे भी तो पता चले …. हाँ, मैं आशा करता हूँ कि मैं अभी यहीं होऊँगा, पर आप इसके ऊपर निर्भर न रहें करीब दस मिनट में। ठीक है । अलविदा।
(वह फोन रख देता है और बाएँ हाथ पर रखे दीवान के निकट जाता है, जहाँ एक सफ़र का बैग है, और वह उसमें सामान रखना शुरू कर देता है। जब वह इस प्रकार व्यस्त होता है, एक अन्य व्यक्ति जो कद-काठी में जिरार्ड के समान है, दाईं ओर से चुपके से प्रवेश करता है— उसके हाथ में रिवॉल्वर है। वह एक भड़कीला ओवरकोट पहने है और एक कोमल हैट लगाए है। वह अकस्मात् मेज से टकराता है और उस आवाज को सुनकर जिरार्ड तेजी से घूमता है। )

जिरार्ड – यह सब अजीब लग रहा है, वास्तविक नहीं। परन्तु …
घुसपैठिया — शांत होने का प्रयत्न करते हुए और मि…..र……
जिरार्ड – मेरे विचार से आपके शब्द शान्त लेकिन अव्यावहारिक है।
घुसपैठिया — बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद। अभी थोड़ी देर में तुम्हारा फुर्तीलापन समाप्त हो जाएगा। मैं तुम्हें अभी रेंगाऊँगा। मैं कुछ चीजें जानना चाहता हूँ। समझे।
जिरार्ड – आप जो चाहें। मुझे सब उत्तर आते हैं। लेकिन शुरू करने से पहले मैं चाहूँगा कि मैं अपना स्थान बदल लूँ। आप आराम महसूस कर रहे होंगे परन्तु मैं नहीं।
घुसपैठिया—वहाँ नीचे बैठो, और कोई मजाक की बात न करो। (वह कुर्सी की ओर जाता है और स्वयं थैले के समीप तख्त पर बैठ जाता है।)

जिरार्ड – मेरे विचार से अच्छी समझ का परिचय कष्ट से बचने की योग्यता में अधिक परिलक्षित होता है अपेक्षाकृत केवल उसके करने की इच्छा में। आपका क्या विचार है, मि……र…..
घुसपैठिया – मेरे नाम की चिंता मत करो। मुझे तुम्हारा नाम मि० जिरार्ड कहीं अधिक अच्छा लगता है। तुम्हारा वास्तविक नाम क्या है ?

घुसपैठिया – क्या तुम कार चलाते हो ?
जिरार्ड – नहीं।
घुसपैठिया — यह झूठ है । तुम किसी मूर्ख से बात नहीं कर रहे हो । मैं उतना ही होशियार हूँ जितना तुम और उससे भी अधिक समझदार और मैं जानता हूँ कि तुम कार चलाते हो। समझदार आदमी, बेहतर हो कि तुम सावधान रहो !
जिरार्ड – क्या आप अमेरिकी हैं अथवा यह केवल दिखावा मात्र है?
घुसपैठिया — सुनो, यह बन्दूक कोई खिलौना नहीं है। मैं तुम्हारी जान लिए बिना तुम्हें नुकसान पहुँचा सकता हूँ और तब भी उत्तर प्राप्त कर सकता हूँ।
जिरार्ड – वास्तव में, यदि आप इसको उस तरफ रख दें तो, मुझे सहायता करने में प्रसन्नता होगी। मैं कार का मालिक हूँ। और वह मोड़ पर स्थित उस गैराज में है ।
घुसपैठिया — यह हुई न बात। क्या यहाँ लोग प्राय: आते-जाते हैं ?

घुसपैठिया – जब तुम्हें पता चल जाएगा कि मैं इस छोटे-से घर में क्यों जबरदस्ती घुसा हूँ तो तुमको आश्चर्य होगा लेकिन वह सुखद आश्चर्य नहीं होगा।
जिरार्ड — इस मकान में आप इतना बड़ा आकार लिए प्रकट हुए हैं, यह बात समझ में आने योग्य है। वैसे ही, आप अपराध की किस विशिष्ट शाखा में अभ्यास करते हैं, अथवा आप कोई विशेषज्ञ नहीं हैं ?
घुसपैठिया – मैं हीरे-जवाहरात की डकैती डालने का विशेषज्ञ हूँ। तुम्हारी कार मेरे लिए अकस्मात् उपहार होगा। निश्चित रूप से यह फैशनेबिल बस है।
जिरार्ड – मुझे डर है एसेक्स के वीरान प्रदेश में हीरे-जवाहरात बहुत ही दुर्लभ हैं।
घुसपैठिया — ऐसे ही पुलिस वाले भी दुर्लभ हैं। मैं यहाँ कुछ दिनों तक आराम से विश्राम कर सकता हूँ।

घुसपैठिया – तुम यहाँ अधिक देर तक नहीं रहोगे; अतः मैंने पूछने की आवश्यकता नहीं समझी।
जिरार्ड – आपका क्या तात्पर्य है?
घुसपैठिया- – यह तुम्हारे लिए बड़ा आश्चर्य है। मैं तुम्हारी जान लेने वाला हूँ।
जिरार्ड – यह थोड़ा क्रूर है, है न ?
घुसपैठिया— (कठोर व्यंग्य के साथ) हाँ ! ऐसा करना खेद की बात होगी। मुझे तुमसे लगाव हो गया है, फिर भी ऐसा करना ही पड़ेगा।
जिरार्ड – आप अन्य अपराधों के साथ कत्ल को क्यों जोड़ रहे हैं? यह एक गंभीर कदम है जो आप उठाने जा रहे हैं।
घुसपैठिया — मैं यह मनोरंजन के लिए नहीं कर रहा हूँ। मेरे पीछे बहुत दिनों से पुलिस पड़ी हुई है। पहले से ही कत्ल के लिए मेरी तलाश जारी है। वे मुझे दो बार फाँसी नहीं दे सकते।
जिरार्ड—आपकी योजना एक पत्थर से दो चिड़ियों को मारना है, यह बात है। मान लिया आपका कुछ नहीं जाना है पर आपको मिलना क्या है ?

घुसपैठिया—नहीं ! अच्छा, यह तो तुम्हारे विषय में सत्य है । मुझे केवल चश्मा लगाना है और मैं काफ़ी कुछ तुम्हारे समान हो जाऊँगा और मुझे इसके लिए कोई दण्ड नहीं मिलेगा।
जिरार्ड—आपके वस्त्रों के विषय में क्या है ? यदि आप सावधान नहीं हैं तो वे आपको शर्मिन्दा करेंगे।
घुसपैठिया—वह सब ठीक हो जाएगा। तुम्हारे वस्त्र मुझे अच्छी तरह से फिट आएँगे।
जिरार्ड—यह तो अत्यधिक रोचक है । परन्तु ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि आप मेरे कहने के महत्त्व को भूल गए हैं। मैंने कहा था- आप अधिकांश सनसनीखेज नाटकों के खलनायकों से कहीं अधिक सौभाग्यशाली हैं। वह आपकी बुद्धिमानी के लिए प्रशंसा नहीं थी। आपके पास बहुत अच्छा कारण है आप मेरी हत्या नहीं करेंगे।
घुसपैठिया — यह तो तुम्हारे सोचने की बात है।
जिरार्ड – आप मुझे जीवित रहने देंगे, और ईश्वर को धन्यवाद देंगे कि आपने मेरी हत्या शीघ्र ही नहीं की।
घुसपैठिया—कहते रहो। जो तुम्हारे मन में है। अच्छा होगा यदि तुम जल्दी करो। बातचीत से मैं ऊब गया हूँ।
जिरार्ड- मुझे मारकर और मेरी पहचान लेकर, आपके विचार से, आप पुलिस से बचकर भाग जाएँगे।
घुसपैठिया – हाँ, मुझे यह विचार पसन्द है।
जिरार्ड —परन्तु क्या आपको विश्वास है कि इससे आपको सहायता मिलेगी।
घुसपैठिया—अब मेरी बात सुनो। मैंने यह सब सोच-विचारकर किया है। मैं कस्बे में नौकरी करता था, पर बात बिगड़ गई और मैंने एक सिपाही की हत्या कर दी। जब से मैं कुछ नहीं कर पाया हूँ सिवाय बचकर भागने के।
जिरार्ड- और यह स्थान है जहाँ आप पुलिस को चकमा देकर आ गए हैं।
घुसपैठिया – वह मुझे ऐलिसबरी ले आई। उस स्थान पर मैंने तुमको कार में देखा । वहाँ दो आदमी तुमसे मिले और तुमने बातें शुरू की। मैं सुनता रहा। उससे ऐसा लगा कि तुम थोड़े विचित्र ढंग के रहस्यमयी आदमी हो।
जिरार्ड – एक रहस्य जो मैं आपको समझाने का प्रस्ताव करता हूँ।
घुसपैठिया — ( उसकी अवहेलना करते हुए) तुम सामान मँगाने के लिए फोन द्वारा ऑर्डर देते हो और कभी-कभी अचानक ही बाहर चले जाते हो और ठीक उसी प्रकार वापस आ जाते हो। वे चीजें हैं जिनको मैं करना चाहता हूँ। तुम्हारे विषय में सुनने का एक बहुत सौभाग्यशाली अवसर था।
जिरार्ड – स्पष्ट रूप से आप में वह बुद्धि नहीं है कि आप पूछें कि मैं इस रहस्यमय चोगे को क्यों पहने हुए हूँ।

जिरार्ड- – यह आपका बड़ा आश्चर्य है। मैंने कहा था कि आप मुझे नहीं मारेंगे और ऐसा कहने में मैं सही था। आप क्यों सोचते हैं कि मैं आज यहाँ हूँ और कल चला जाऊँगा। मैं कभी व्यापारियों से नहीं मिलता।
आप कहते हैं कि मेरी आदतें आपके अनुकूल रहेंगी। तुम बेईमान हो। क्या आप मुझे धार्मिक उपदेशक समझते हैं ?
जहाँ तक मेरा सम्बन्ध है खेल समाप्त हो गया है। मेरे लिए परिस्थिति बिगड़ रही है। मैंने गोली का प्रयोग किया और भाग गया। दुर्भाग्य से पुलिस को एक मेरा आदमी मिल गया और उनको वे चीजें मिली, जो उस मूर्ख को जला देनी चाहिए थीं। मुझे आशंका है कि आज रात मेरे लिए परेशानी की होगी। भाग जाने के लिए मैंने अपने बैग में सामान रख लिया है । वह बैग वहाँ रखा है।
घुसपैठिया – यह बैग है, बिल्कुल ठीक और यह बन्दूक है, बिल्कुल ठीक। यह सब क्या ?
जिरार्ड- – यह वेश बदलने का साजोसामान है, नकली मूँछें और अन्य चीजें। क्या अब आप मेरा विश्वास करेंगे ?
घुसपैठिया – (विचारमग्न होकर ) नहीं जानता।
जिरार्ड – ईश्वर के लिए अपने शंकालु मन को साफ कीजिए और अब हमें जाना चाहिए। मेरे साथ कार में आइए । मैं आपका प्रयोग कर सकता हूँ। यदि आपको यह सब मनगढ़न्त लगे, आप कार में होंगे और आपके पास अब भी बन्दूक होगी।
घुसपैठिया – शायद तुम ठीक हो ।
जिरार्ड- -तब समय नष्ट न करो ( जाता है और हैट तथा बैग उठाता है।)
घुसपैठिया – सावधान, मालिक। मैं तुम पर नजर रखे हूँ।
जिरार्ड – मैंने मुख्य सड़क पर एक आदमी खड़ा कर रखा है। यदि वह पुलिस को देखता है तो मुझे फोन करेगा, लेकिन मैं आपको छोड़ना नहीं चाहता……(टेलीफोन की घण्टी बजती है।) आ जाओ। वे हमारा पीछा कर रहे हैं। यहाँ से एकदम गैराज पर चलो।
घुसपैठिया – मुझे कैसे पता चलेगा कि तुम सही कह रहे हो ?
जिरार्ड – ओह ! मूर्ख मत बनिए। आप स्वयं देखिए ।
(जिरार्ड दरवाजा खोलता है और एक ओर हट जाता है । घुसपैठिया जिरार्ड की ओर अपनी पीठ करके उसे देखने के लिए आगे की ओर झुकता है, परन्तु रिवॉल्वर हाथ में तैयार है। जैसे ही वह सिर घुमाता है, जिराई उसको अलमारी में धकेल देता है उसके हाथ से रिवॉल्वर छूट जाता है, वह दरवाजा एकदम बन्द कर देता है और ताला लगा देता है।)
(जिरार्ड रिवॉल्वर उठा लेता है और फोन के पास जाता है जहाँ वह रिवॉल्वर का निशाना अलमारी के दरवाजे की ओर लगाता है।)
घुसपैठिया – ( दरवाजे पर धक्के मारता है और चीखता है।) मुझे यहाँ से बाहर निकलने दो।

As the intruder was a criminal, he had killed a cop, he planned to murder Gerrard and impersonate him.
One day the intruder entered Gerrard’s cottage with a revolver in his hand. First he wanted Gerrard to talk to him so that he might get more clues about him.
In long and short, Gerrard outwitted the intruder. He closed him in the cupboard and locked the door. Then he sent for the police to get him arrested.
Thus we see the intruder could not succeed in his plan.

II. Irony is when we say one thing but mean another, usually the opposite of what we say. When someone makes a mistake and you say, “Oh! that was clever!” that is irony. You’re saying ‘clever’ to mean ‘not clever.’
