THE LITTLE GIRL (Katherine Mansfield)
Introduction: ‘The Little Girl’ is a story about the changing attitdue of a girl child towards her father. Her feelings for her father change gradually from fear to understanding.

SUMMARY OF THE STORY IN ENGLISH
Kezia was a little girl. She was afraid of the father and avoided him. She felt relieved when he left for his office. When father came home in the evening, he would call his daughter to bring tea, newspaper and slippers. Kezia would stammer while replying because she heard no sweet words at all.
On Sunday afternoon grandmother sent Kezia to the drawing room to have a nice talk with Father and Mother. But she found them indifferent to her.
One day when Kezia was kept indoors with a cold, grandmother told her that father’s birthday was next week. She suggested to Kezia to make a pin-cushion for a gift. She worked hard. She stitched the three sides of it I with a double cotton on it. Now, she wanted to stuff it with something. She roamed about every room. On the bed-table she found many sheets of fine paper. She tore them to pieces and filled the pin cushion and stitched the fourth side.
Those paper contained the speech of father for the Port Authority.. Mother came to know that Kezia tore them to pieces to fill the pin-cushion. Father punished her.
Next morning, Kezia saw through a hole in the fence. Mrs Macdonald who had five children was playing with them. There was laughter and joy. Kezia felt that they were different sorts of parents.
One evening the little girl was left alone with Alice, the cook. Alice made her sleep in her bed in the night. She had a nightmare-the butcher with a knife and a rope. She cried, Father who was sleeping in the next door, took Kezia in his arms and lay her beside him. She crept close to him and held his shirt tightly. He slept before the little girl. She felt, “Poor father works very hard. No one looks after him. He gets tired. I had torn his speech.” She stirred suddenly and sighed.
Father got up and asked what the matter was. Kezia said, “Oh, my head is on your heart. I can hear it going. What a big heart you have got, father dear.”

Para 1. “To the little……..me my slippers.”
उस छोटी लड़की के लिए वह ऐसा व्यक्ति था जिससे वह डरती थी और दूर रहना चाहती थी। प्रतिदिन प्रातः अपने काम पर जाने से पहले वह उसके कमरे में आता था और उसका आकस्मिक चुम्बन करता था और वह प्रत्युत्तर में ‘अलविदा, पिता जी’ कहा करती थी। और लम्बी सड़क पर उसके वाहन की आवाज की गति जैसे-जैसे धीमी होती जाती थी, वह लड़की चैन की साँस लेती थी।
शाम के समय जब वह घर आता था, वह जीने के पास खड़ी हो जाती थी और हॉल में उसकी जोर की आवाज सुनती थी। “मेरी चाय ड्राइंग रूम में ले आओ.. ‘क्या समाचार पत्र अभी नहीं आया? माँ, जाओ और देखो कि मेरा अखबार वहाँ पड़ा है – और मेरा स्लीपर लेकर आओ।”
Para 2. “Kezia,” ……….. “I d-d-don’t know. Father.”
माँ उस लड़की को पुकारती थी, “केजिया, यदि तुम अच्छी लड़की हो, तो तुम नीचे आ सकती हो और अपने पिता के बूट उतार सकती हो।” लड़की धीरे से जीने से नीचे आती थी और धीरे से हॉल को पार करती थी और ड्राइंग रूम के किवाड़ों को धक्का मारकर खोल देती थी।
उस समय तक वह अपना चश्मा लगाए रहता था और उनके ऊपर से ऐसे ढंग से देखता था कि वह छोटी लड़की आतंकित हो जाती थी । उतारो और उनको
“अच्छा, केजिया, जल्दी आओ और मेरे बूटों को बाहर ले जाओ। क्या तुम आज अच्छी लड़की रही हो?”
“पिता जी, मैं न-न- नहीं जानती । “
“You d-d-don’t know ? ……… to the doctor.”
“तुम न न नहीं जानती ? यदि तुम इस प्रकार हकलाओगी तो माँ को तुम्हें डॉक्टर के यहाँ ले जाना पड़ेगा।”
Para 3. “She never…..about a gaint.”
वह दूसरे लोगों के साथ हकलाती नहीं थी। बिल्कुल ठीक ढंग से बोलती थी— केवल पिता के सिवाय, क्योंकि उस समय वह घोर प्रयास करती कि वह सही ढंग से बोले।
“क्या मामला है? तुम इतनी शोकसंतप्त क्यों दीख रही हो? माँ, मैं चाहता हूँ कि तुम इस बच्ची को सिखाओ कि वह आत्महत्या के कगार पर न दिखाई दे केजिया, यहाँ आओ, मेरे चाय के प्याले को सावधानी से वापस मेज पर ले जाओ।”
वह इतना बड़ा था — उसके हाथ और उसकी गर्दन, विशेष रूप से जब वह जँभाई लेता था तो उसका मुँह बहुत बड़ा लगता था। जब केजिया केवल उसके बारे में सोचती थी वह किसी दैत्य के बारे में सोचने के समान था।
Para 4. “On Sunday…………snoring.”
रविवार को तीसरे पहर दादी केजिया को नीचे ड्राइंग रूम में भेजती थी कि वह ” अपने पिता और माता के साथ प्यारी बातें कर सके।” पर वह छोटी लड़की अपनी माँ को सदा समाचार पढ़ती और पिता को अपने रूमाल से अपना चेहरा ढके सोफे पर लेटे देखती थी। उसके पैर एक सबसे अच्छे गद्दे के ऊपर होते थे और वह गहरी नींद में सोते हुए खर्राटे भरता रहता था।
“She sat……………..yellow silk.”
वह एक स्टूल पर बैठ जाती थी, उसकी ओर गंभीरता से देखती रहती थी जब तक वह जाग नहीं जाता था और अंगड़ाई नहीं लेता था और समय नहीं पूछता था – तब वह केजिया की ओर देखता था।
“केजिया, तुम घूरकर मत देखा करो। तुम एक छोटे भूरे उल्लू जैसी दिखाई देती हो । “
एक दिन, जब उसको जुकाम के कारण अन्दर कमरे में ही रखा गया, उसकी दादी ने उससे कहा कि अगले सप्ताह तुम्हारे पिता का जन्मदिन है और उसको सुझाव दिया कि वह उपहार के लिए पीली रेशम के सुन्दर टुकड़े से एक पिन- कुशन बनाए ।
Para 5. “Laboriously, ……….. this instant.”
छोटी लड़की ने बहुत परिश्रम करके दोहरे सूत से उसकी तीन ओर से सिलाई की। पर उसमें क्या भरे? प्रश्न यह था । दादी उद्यान में बाहर थी और केजिया अपनी माँ के शयन कक्ष में छोटे-छोटे टुकड़े (कतरनें) देखने के लिए अचानक चली गई।
उसने देखा कि बिस्तर के पास रखी हुई मेज पर सुन्दर कागजों की बहुत-सी शीट रखी हुई हैं, उसने उनको इकट्ठा किया और फाड़कर उनके छोटे-छोटे टुकड़े किए तथा केस में उनको भर दिया और तब चौथी ओर भी सिलाई कर दी।
उस रात मकान में बहुत शोर-शराबा हुआ। बन्दरगाह-प्राधिकरण के लिए पिता द्वारा लिखा विस्तृत भाषण गायब हो गया। कमरों में खोजा गया, नौकरों से प्रश्न किए गए। अन्त में माँ केजिया के कमरे में आई ।
“केजिया, मैं सोचती हूँ, कि तुमने हमारे कमरे में मेज पर कुछ कागज नहीं देखे?”
केजिया ने उत्तर दिया, “अरे हाँ, मैंने उनको अपने चकित करने वाले उपहार के लिए फाड़ दिया । “
माँ चिल्लाई, “क्या ! इसी क्षण सीधे डाइनिंग रूम में नीचे चलो।”
Para 6. “And she ……. bed this instant.”
और उसको खींच कर नीचे वहाँ ले जाया गया जहाँ पिता कमर पर हाथ रखे इधर-उधर घूम रहे थे।
उसने एकदम कहा, “अच्छा?”
माँ ने बात समझाई।
पिता ने घूमना बन्द किया और केजिया की ओर घूर कर देखा । “क्या तुमने किया वह काम ?”
उसने धीरे से कहा, “न-न-नहीं। ”
माँ उसके कमरे में जाओ और वे अभिशापित फटे कागज लेकर आओ। देखो इसी क्षण इसे पीट-पीटकर ऐसा कर दो कि यह बिस्तर पर ही लेटी रहे।”

वह इतना अधिक रो रही थी कि बात नहीं बता सकी। वह अँधेरे कमरे में पड़ी रही। वह संध्या के प्रकाश को फर्श पर एक दुःखमय छोटा डिजाइन बनाते हुए देख रही थी।
तब पिता हाथ में डंडा लेकर कमरे में आए।
मैं इसके लिए तुम्हारी पिटाई करूँगा।
बिस्तर के कपड़ों के नीचे छिपते हुए वह चिल्लाई, “ओह, नहीं, नहीं ।”
पिता ने कपड़ों को एक ओर हटा दिया।
पिता ने आज्ञा दी, “बैठ जाओ और अपने हाथ बढ़ाओ। तुम्हें एक बार और सदा भविष्य के लिए यह सिखा दिया जाना चाहिए कि जो चीजें तुमसे सम्बन्धित नहीं हैं उनको स्पर्श न किया जाए। “
” पर यह आपके जन्मदिन के लिए था।”
उसकी छोटी गुलाबी हथेलियों पर डंडा पड़ा।
Para 8. “Hours later, ………her cheeks.”
घंटों बाद, जब दादी ने उसे शॉल में लपेटकर, झूलने वाली कुर्सी में बैठाकर झुलाया तो वह बच्ची उसके कोमल शरीर से चिपकी रही।
वह सिसकी भरकर बोली, “भगवान ने पिता को किसलिए बनाया? “
“यह साफ रूमाल है, प्रिय बेटी, अपनी नाक साफ करो । सो जाओ। प्रिय, तुम सुबह तक इस बात को भूल जाओगी। मैंने तुम्हारे पिता को समझाने की कोशिश की, पर वह आज रात कुछ भी सुनने के लिए तैयार नहीं है। “
पर बच्ची कभी नहीं भूली। जब उसने अपने पिता को देखा, उसने तेजी से अपने हाथ अपनी कमर के पीछे कर लिए और उसके गालों का रंग लाल हो गया।
Para 9. “The Macdonalds…….in the daytime.”
साथ में लगे मकान में मैकडोनाल्ड परिवार रहता था। उनके पाँच बच्चे थे। छोटी लड़की ने बाड़ के सुराख से उनको शाम के समय ‘टैग’ खेलते हुए देखा। पिता ने बेबी ‘माओ’ को अपने कंधों पर बिठा रखा था, दो छोटी लड़कियाँ उसके कोट की जेबों से लटकी हुई पुष्प शय्या के चारों ओर दौड़ रही थीं, वे हँसी से झूम रहे थे। केजिया ने एक बार देखा कि लड़के ने पानी का पाइप अपने पिता की ओर घुमा दिया, और वे हर समय हँसते हुए उनको पकड़ने की कोशिश करते थे।
तब केजिया ने यह निर्णय लिया कि पिता भी विभिन्न प्रकार के होते हैं।
अचानक केजिया की माँ बीमार हो गई और वह और दादी अस्पताल गईं।
छोटी लड़की को महाराजिन (खाना बनाने वाली) एलिस के साथ घर में अकेला छोड़ दिया गया। दिन के समय तो सब बातें ठीक थीं।
“but while…………..afraid.”
पर जब एलिस उसको बिस्तर पर सुला रही थी तो वह अचानक ही भयभीत हो गई।
Para 10. “What’ll I do…….your poor Pa.”
उसने पूछा, “यदि मुझे भयंकर सपना आ गया तो मैं क्या करूंगी? मुझे प्राय: भयंकर सपने आते हैं और तब दादी मुझे अपने बिस्तर में ले जाती हैं। मैं अँधेरे में नहीं रह सकती- -मुझे धीमी-धीमी आवाजें सुनाई देने लगती हैं।”
केजिया की जुराबें उतारती हुई, एलिस ने कहा, “बच्ची, तुम अब सो जाओ और चीखना मत और अपने बेचारे पिता को न जगा देना।”
“But the ….. ……”what’s the matter?” he said.”
पर वही पुराना भयंकर सपना आया – कसाई जिसके हाथ में चाकू और रस्सी है, वह करीब आता गया, और भयंकर मुस्कान मुस्कराता रहा जबकि केजिया हिल भी नहीं पा रही थी, वह सीधी खड़ी होकर चिल्ला रही थी, “दादी माँ, दादी माँ।” वह अपने पिता को हाथ में मोमबत्ती लिए, अपने बिस्तर के पास खड़े देखकर काँपने लगी।
उन्होंने कहा, “क्या मामला है?”

“ओह, एक कसाई – एक चाकू — दादी माँ को बुलाओ।” उन्होंने रास्ते से होकर अपने बड़े शयन कक्ष में चले गए। बिस्तर पर एक समाचार मोमबत्ती बुझा दी, नीचे झुके और बच्ची को अपनी बाँहों में उठाया और पत्र पड़ा था। पढ़ने वाले लैम्प के पास आधी जली हुई सिगार पड़ी थी। उन्होंने समाचार पत्र हटाया, सिगार को अँगीठी में फेंका, तब सावधानीपूर्वक बच्ची को लिटाया और वह उसके पास लेट गए। ऐसा लगा केजिया उनींदी थी। उसके मन में कसाई की मुस्कान मंडरा रही थी, वह अपने पिता के पास सरक कर आ गई, अपना सिर उनकी बाँह के नीचे रख लिया और उनकी कमीज कसकर पकड़ ली।
तब अँधेरे का कोई महत्त्व नहीं था; वह शान्त लेट गई।
पिता ने कहा, “अपने पैरों को मेरी टाँगों से रगड़ो और उनको गर्म करो। “

वह थका हुए थे और छोटी लड़की से पहले ही सो गए। उसके मस्तिष्क में एक विचित्र भावना आई । बेचारे पिता जी, इतने बड़े नहीं, इसके अतिरिक्त उनकी देखभाल करने के लिए कोई भी नहीं था। वह दादी जी से ज्यादा कठोर थे, पर वह एक उत्तम कठोरता थी। उन्हें प्रतिदिन कार्य करना पड़ता है और इतना थक जाते थे कि वे मैकडोनाल्ड के समान बच्चों में नहीं खेल सकते थे। उसने उनका पूरा महत्त्वपूर्ण लेख फाड़ डाला था। वह अचानक सहम गई, और लम्बी आह भरी।
केजिया के पिता ने पूछा, “क्या मामला है? क्या दूसरा सपना देखा है?”
छोटी लड़की ने कहा, “ओह, मेरा सिर आपके दिल पर रखा है। मैं उसकी धड़कन सुन सकती हूँ। ओ, मेरे प्यारे पिताजी आप सच में कितने विशाल हृदय के हैं।”

Q.1. Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How did this happen?
(केजिया ने अपने पिता को प्रसन्न करने का प्रयास किया, फलस्वरूप वे और अधिक नाराज हो गए। यह कैसे हुआ ? )
Ans. Introduction: Kezia’s grandmother told her that her father’s birthday was next week. She should make him a pin-cushion for a gift.
Her efforts With a lot of effort, with a double cotton, Kezia stitched three sides of the case of a pin-cushion. Now the question was of scraps. She looked for scraps. She discovered many sheets of fine paper on the bed table in her mother’s bedroom. She gathered them up, tore them into tiny pieces and stuffed her case. Then she sewed up the fourth side.
Result: Those papers contained her father’s great speech for the port Authority. When it was found out, she got a beating from her father.
[ भूमिका – केजिया की दादी ने उसको बतलाया कि उसके पिता . का जन्मदिन अगले सप्ताह है। उसे उपहार के लिए एक पिन- कुशन बनाना चाहिए।

परिणाम — उन कागजों में उसके पिता ने पोर्ट अथोरिटी के लिए एक बड़ा भाषण लिखा था, जब यह पता चला, पिता ने केजिया की पिटाई की। ]
Q.2. Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers.” What kind of father was Mr Macdonald and how was he different from Kezia’s father?

Kind of father: Mr Macdonald was a loving father. He spared time to play with his children in the evening. He played tag with his children. He ran round and round the flower-beds, shaking with laughter. Once the boys turned the hose on him, and he tried to catch them laughing.
How different : Mr Macdonald was quite different from Kezia’s father who had no time to play and talk with his only child. She was always afraid of her father. He beat her unkindly for tearing his papers.
Conclusion: Both the father were quite opposite of each other

किस प्रकार भिन्न- श्री मैकडोनाल्ड केजिया के पिता से एकदम भिन्न था। केजिया के पिता के पास अपनी इकलौती पुत्री के साथ खेलने और बात करने के लिए समय नहीं था । केजिया सदैव अपने पिता से डरती रहती थी। उसने अपने कागज फाड़ देने के कारण केजिया की निर्दयता से पिटाई की।
निष्कर्ष – दोनों पिता एक-दूसरे से एकदम अलग थे।]
Q. 3. Write a short character-sketch of Kezia’s father.

Ans. Introduction: Kezia’s father worked in the Port Authority.
Type of Father: Every morning before going to work, he gave his daughter a casual kiss. He was too busy to spare time for Kezia. He therefore could not shower his love and affection on her. But he had a care for his daughter.
Kezia’s feeling for her father: First she was afraid of her father. But at the end of the story there was a sea-change in her feelings for him. She understood his helplessness. He was tired because he had to work very hard for the family. But he had a sense of love and care for Kezia. When she was frightened with the nightmare, he picked up and lay her beside him close to his heart. The Kezia was all for his praise.
Conclusion: Kezia exclaims, “What a big heart you have got, father dear!” Kezia’s father was introvert.
[भूमिका – केजिया के पिता बन्दरगाह प्राधिकरण में कार्य करते थे। किस प्रकार का पिता – प्रतिदिन प्रातः काल काम पर जाने से पूर्व वह केजिया का आकस्मिक चुम्बन करता था। वह इतना व्यस्त रहता था कि वह केजिया के लिए समय नहीं बचा सकता था। अतः वह अपने प्रेम और स्नेह की वर्षा केजिया पर नहीं कर सकता था। पर उसे अपनी पुत्री की चिन्ता थी ।
अपने पिता के बारे में केजिया की भावनाएँ- – पहले तो वह अपने पिता से भयभीत रहती थी। पर कहानी के अंत में अपने पिता के प्रति उसकी भावनाओं में गहरा परिवर्तन आया। वह अपने पिता की लाचारी समझ गई । वह थक जाता था क्योंकि उसे परिवार के लिए बहुत परिश्रम करना पड़ता था । पर उसमें केजिया के प्रति प्रेम और चिन्ता की भावना थी। जब वह भयानक सपने से डरी, उसके पिता ने उसको उठाया और अपने हृदय के निकट उसको लिटाया। तब केजिया अपने पिता की भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा करने लगी।
निष्कर्ष – केजिया अपने उद्गार व्यक्त करती है, “प्रिय पिता, आपका हृदय कितना विशाल है।” केजिया के पिता अन्तर्मुखी थे । ]
Q. 4. Why did Kezia suffer from nightmares ? Explain.

Ans. Introduction: Nightmare is a frightening or unpleasant dream.
Kezia’s nightmare: When it was dark and Kezia was alone, she had nightmares. She very often had the same old nightmare. It was the butcher with a knife and a rope, who came nearer and nearer, smiling that dreadful smile. She cried out, ‘Grandma! Grandma !’ She came to help Kezia. She took her to her bed and made her sleep beside her. One night, when grandma was not there, Kezia’s father picked her up, carried her to his bed and made her lie close to his heart.
Significance of the nightmare: A child has very delicate feelings. Kezia had a ghost of fear of her father. That fear hovered her subconsciousness which appeared in the form of the butcher.
Conclusion: Parents should know the child psychology and treat them accordingly.

केजिया का भयानक सपना – जब अँधेरा हो जाता था और केजिया अकेली होती तो उसे भयानक सपने आते थे। उसको प्रायः एक ही पुराना भयानक सपना दिखाई देता था। वह सपना था — चाकू और रस्सी हाथ में लिए एक कसाई जो केजिया के करीब एक भयंकर मुस्कान लेकर आता था। वह चिल्ला उठती थी, “दादी माँ! दादी माँ !” दादी माँ केजिया की सहायता करने आती थी और उसको उठाकर अपने पास सुलाती थी। एक रात, जब दादी माँ वहाँ नहीं थी, केजिया के पिता ने उसको उठाया, अपने बिस्तर पर ले गया और वहाँ अपने हृदय के समीप उसको लिटा लिया।
भयानक सपने का महत्त्व – बच्चे की भावनाएँ बहुत ही कोमल होती हैं। केजिया के मस्तिष्क अपने पिता के भय का भूत मँडराता रहता था। यह भय उसके अवचेतन मस्तिष्क में मँडराता रहता था, जो एक कसाई के रूप में प्रकट होता था।
